Travelling to anywhere during August? Important!

Hi all,

Now I don't want to panic anyone but I thought you should all know about this.

Earlier, my mum was reading online and found out about a ballot amongst 6,000 BAA staff about potential strike action. Now, if the strike goes ahead, this would mean that BAA airports would be closed as staff would be striking. Ballot closes on August 12 and right at the minute, strikes are planned for August 19.

This would effect me travelling and I guess many more, not just international flight.

Found this article online that may be of interest.

I know I will be watching this, just hope they take note of how unsuccessful the BA strike was.

Jack

Hi Jack
Can't read the story as it says you have to subscribe.
I have read pages and pages on the subject and as far as I can make out no strikes can take place now before September, even if they do strike again the Orlando/Tampa routes from Gatwick should be almost unaffected.

One quote here from ThisisMoney.co.uk
"In a welcome relief, any strike action will not hit the school summer holidays, which begin for most children this weekend. Strike rules mean there is not enough time for a ballot to be held and a strike begin before the next academic year begins in September."

And another from FT.com
"Unite has the option of calling another ballot on further strikes, which could take place from September, but this vote suggests it may struggle to win a convincing majority"

Good to hear that they shouldnt be able to strike in the remainder of the school holidays.

To be honest BA's history of strikes always leaves me reluctant to book any flights with them nowdays.

That, along with the luggage story with BA  has made me refuse to fly with them anymore. The flights would have to be free for me to even think about going with them. :sad2:

Just to clarify, this is BAA as in British Airports Authority, not BA as in British airways :)

Most people fly out from Gatwick or Manchester, some from Glascow and out of those airports only Glascow is owned by BAA so most should be OK if there were to be a strike.

Oops should read more carefully, thought Jack had said BA, Sorry Jack:goodvibes

Millions of families could have their summer holiday plans ruined by strikes at six UK airports, including Heathrow and Stansted.
The Unite union is to ballot more than 6,000 BAA workers in a pay dispute.
BAA, which also operates Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Southampton airports, imposed a pay freeze last year.
It has offered a 1% rise this year, plus 0.5% if the union agrees to changes in the firm's sickness agreement.
Unite national secretary Brendan Gold said: "People feel very aggrieved. They're not prepared to keep on taking the hits."
The ballot result will be known on August 12, meaning strikes could hit the busy Bank Holiday weekend.
A spokesman for BAA, which is owned by Spanish firm Ferrovia, said: "We regret this decision, which will cause concern for millions of our passengers.

Unite up to there old tricks again. I'm all for unions to make sure us workers are getting a fair deal but Unite seem to specialise in putting the public at risk so they can blackmail companies such as BA and BAA to meeting there demands.

The country is still in economical trouble and is far from out of it but Unite are still demanding that staff are given pay rises. I think that BAA staff are lucky to get a 1% rise!

Anyway, sore subject for me so i'll shut up now!

Well some of us live around here - and we would NOT be happy!

Me too! I'll blame the sleepless nights with a baby....:lmao:

That is the best excuse possible! Hope you get a good night's sleep tonight! :cloud9:

As we're flying out and in to Heathrow this WILL affect us but and it's a BIG BUT we leave on August 7th so the worse that can happen is that we'd be stuck in New York at our friends.

A question to those in the know....... I bought our tickets with Virgin miles + money. If we get delayed due to Heathrow being shut any ideas what Virgin will do in terms of getting us on another flight ?

Well I think this Unite chief exec is a total nutter!
First he brings MG down and then is trying it with BA and now BAA!

Shouldn't these people be grateful they have a job in the first place and have a pay freeze not a cut?! Absolute joke!

I just hope this doesn't effect us, typical the one year we don't fly from MAN!

Where are you flying from this year?

We're flying from LHR into BOS and then down to MIA and driving up.
Just typical isn't it! We usually from MAN!
