Hello there! After deciding to only use our credit card for our rental car (we have pre-paid our accommodation), we purchased travellers cheques at our AMA this weekend. Afterwards, a friend who works in a bank said that they are no longer viewed as "cash" and people have a lot of trouble with them being accepted in the U.S.A. This was not mentioned to us when we purchased them. Has anyone had difficulty with using travellers cheques in the Disney Parks or surrounding vicinity (shops, restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, etc.)? Wondering if we made a mistake.

I have been using travellers cheques for 10 years at Disney and never had a problem.:hippie:

I used them all the time on my last few trips and will use them this time. you can always give some to the CM at check-in and allow room charging... then get your change when you check out if you are worried at all

We had trouble using them while driving to and from Disney, but never any trouble at Disney. We actually had to go practically on fumes to another town because none of the gas stations would take them!

Thank you for your replies. Will watch the gas thing! Is there a place at MK (or the other parks) to exchange travellers cheques for cash for gas/groceries, etc? We are staying offsite.

I don't know anywhere that will just cash the travellers cheque, but we would just use one for a purchase so we had the change. Disney is really good about accepting them. We used them at counter service restaurants, gift shops, etc. If we were running a little low on cash, we'd use a $50 cheque to pay for a $10 meal and have the $40 in change.

We've also found many hotels we've stayed at will cash a cheque at the front desk to a certain limit every day (usually $50). I wouldn't advise trying to use a bank, because they will often charge a commission.

We always use them in Disney, we carry a combo of cash and travel chqs. Haven't had a problem, but am not sure outside of Disney. We do the same as another poster. If we are low on cash will use a larger $ travel chq to pay for a small purchase.

In place of travellers checks there is a pre-paid mastercard. You use it just like an credit card but you have to load the card before you use it. Most banks have them and CAA (I think). There is also an AmEx version.

We have never had a problem at Disney, however I was staying at a Hampton Inn in Braintree, MA last September and the front desk would not cash them. So those staying offsite may want to keep it in mind just in case.
