some opinions on the advantages/disadvantages of using traveller's checks in ports and other places while cruising. Thanks!

Posting so that I can get replies, too! Wondering this very thing myself.

We took travelors checks, had no problems. But everyone in the Caribbean takes US dollars.
My son went to France and Spain on a school trip in June and everyone looked at me like I was crazy when I asked about taking travelers checks.
I was told "nobody uses travelers checks anymore". In this case it made more sense to use a debit or atm card, or a reloadable card like a Visa Buxx card.. My son was able to get the cash he needed anytime, in euros. Travelors checks would have to be cashed at a bank, or store. And I was able to monitor his spending from home on the internet, to see if he needed more money put on his card.
Mind you I sent him to France and Spain with $500, and he only spent $300. And almost all of that was meals. Interesting that all the GIRLS parents on the trip gave their daughters at least $2000 to spend.
