Traveling with Baby and Family -- Questions.

After 38 years of going to DL as a kid, this New Years I will be going as a parent(!) Wow! I have a million questions, here are three:

(1) My son will be 15 months old when we go. How do you transport a little one in a taxi from the airport to the hotels? Do taxis have baby car seats? Are there other options for properly, safely and legally seating a baby? How about car rentals?

(2) Any tips for a family that will have a baby in a stroller and a senior in a wheel chair? (e.g., rides, reserving a stroller and wheelchair, logistics, etc.) There will be five other adults.

(3) What rides and attractions are not to be missed (for a 15 month old)? He likes being surprised and is quite the little daredevil already (loves playing airplane over his parents' heads!)

Thanks for any help! I know this is going to be a lot of fun!

The first 2 questions are easy. The shuttles have car seats... when you go to the stand, you specificaly tell the dispatcher that you want a shuttle or taxi with a carseat. Car rental companies also provide car seats.

Come over the the disABILITIES Board for information about travelling with people in wheelchairs or ECVs. You can click on the link in my signature for the disABILITIES FAQ, which has info about wheelchair use, the Special Assistance Pass (also known at WDW as the GAC) which will be helpful to you.

For the third question... FantasyLand is wonderful at Disneyland. You will have a great time there. The boats at Frontierland are also great for babies... lots to do and see all over the parks.

You may also need/want to take advantage of their Baby Changing Station located at the end of Main Street on the right hand side (if facing the castle). This is a great place to get away from the crowds, have a little snack, potty or diaper change, and just some R&R.

You'll also be able to use the 'Kid switch' service, and the wheelchair access areas. (more of this can be found on the disABILITIES board as teri mentioned. )

Hi Lynn-Marie,

Where in California are you??

We have traveled to Disneyland with our Nick when he was 8 mo, 16 mo, and 23 mo (also WDW @ 20 mo). At 8 mo, we used Airport Bus, at 16 mo we used SuperShuttle and this last time @ 23 mo, we wised up and rented a car (we like that much better than relying on other people's schedules and stopping off).

If you are flying in, either buy a seat (makes the flight more relaxing) or take along a car seat (if the flight is not full, you can strap the seat in and have it for free!).

Then you can use your own car seat in the SuperShuttle or rental car. Just make sure when you book your shuttle that you tell them you have a car seat (or else they might not account for the extra seat space - though children under 3 should not incur a charge).

And above all, have a GREAT time. We have loved watching Nick grow with each of this visits... he's a veteran now before the age of 2

Can't help you with the wheelchair thing - but I might look to you for guidance on that when you get back - we plan to visit WDW with my father in law, who will be unable to handle all the walking (broken back) and we'll probably wheelchair or ECV it!

And as for the baby - try to give him lots of opportunities to run around and explore - I know it's hard because it's crowded, but Nick loved being able to be "on his own" more than any ride or attraction. If you have other people with you to help watch him, Toontown is a nice place to run around - you just have to have people strategically placed at all the exits to the attraction (such as the walkthrough houses, or Donald Duck's boat).

It's great to know that the various shuttles and car rentals have car seats! I will check out the disABILITIES board to find out more about DL and wheel chairs. I've taken my g'ma to WDW and used the wheel chair there, but I'm not sure how DL differs, if at all. Just want to be prepared.

Joy: I live in the SF Bay Area. You'll feel very good about using the ECV at WDW. They are extremely organized and helpful. We took our 2 g'mas last year to WDW -- one in a stroller and one in an ECV. You might want to check out the prices for renting an ECV from someone off-site. Rental on-site is pretty high -- although that's what we did because we didn't know there were other options. Also, the ECVs go very quickly -- you have to be there at early admission times to ensure that you get one. Hope you enjoy your trip!
