Due to an unexpected delay in the healing of a bunionectomy, (I have been off of my foot for almost 6 months) I find myself going to WDW and on a 4 day cruise on the Wonder with my 23 year old travel agent son who himself is disabled. He gets around beautifully in his electric chair which will go with him to Florida.

My question is have any of you had any experience being at WDW in an aircast? I know I will be hot but other than that, will I be able to make it? I'm almost 60 but very active. I really hate to think about renting a scooter. We would really be a spectacle then!! Any comments or advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

Make sure you have cleared this with your Dr. Ask him what medicine to use in case your leg would happen to break out (chaff). Wear confortable socks that are high engough to cover leg where splint well be. Make sure to take off the air splint to air your leg. If sock becomes wet change it. I think you will have a wonderful time.

I can relate but my best advise is do it anyhow! I went 2+ years ago and was sick (not a cast). The doctor advised to get a wheel chair and declined. I thought at 30 I can do this. Well, I barely made it from the hotel room to the bus and half way down mainstreet when I realized this was not happening. The scooter didn't thrill me but it made my trip really enjoyable. If you resolve to do it now, you can rent one independently and have it waiting at the hotel for you. Sometimes the parks are out of them (and the parks are much more expensive)

Good luck
Sandy

txadmin~ I know exactly how you feel. I went last year to WDW with an aircast. I actually had a bunionectomy go bad about 12 years ago and have had to have several more corrective surgeries to try and fix it (didn't work) I have been in either a cast or air cast for the last 7 years, on and off crutches. I really didn't have that much of a problem with mine. It got a little sweaty, but for the most part I'm used to it. I wear mine w/o the big sock but you might want to bring an extra if it does get sweaty or wet. Using a little bit of powder might help too. Since it is an air cast you have the option of undoing it when ever it gets bothersome, just take a break if this happens and let it "breathe". I think you will have a wonderful time even with the aircast. Take your time and enjoy your trip.

I hope you make a full and wonderful recovery!!!!

Thanks for posting, Gina. I'm going with a positive attitude. You are right. I can stop and take it off from time to time. I had not even thought of that. Thanks for the suggestion.

Seven years????

Hope you are doing better now. :bounce: :Pinkbounc

You are very welcome!

Yep...7 years. Better? Well, I still am in the air cast. Probobly will be forever. They can't get me in a shoe that's comfortable. At one point I had all my toes plated and 26 screws, now I only have 3 plates and about 15 screws. They are permanent, unless something else goes wrong. Because I am so used to the air cast, to me it's not a big deal, actually I feel strange w/o it.
I hope yours heals much better!!

Enjoy your trip!!!:D

Hope you have a great trip - and if you need it get a scooter....don't worry about being a spectacle. You do whatever you need to to have an enjoyable trip. My husband and I are going in early September and I'll be 7 months pregnant and he made the comment that if we had to he could get me a wheelchair....which I vehemently even refused to consider....but since that conversation I have thought about it and if I'm just too worn out to keep up with him and our friends I will do it. However I am walking everyday for about 30 minutes trying to stay somewhat physically active during this pregnancy so it won't even be an issue. But I have decided that the most important thing is my comfort and safety (and that of my baby) as long as we aren't intruding on others fun I will do whatever it takes to make sure we have fun.
