Traveling to WDW by car....

Wow! Some of you are hard core! ;) We drive about 10 hours and we're wiped out. Yes we get the DISNEY HIGH as we approach the resort, but our bodies are just so tired. This trip, we plan to do MNSSHP for a few hours and that's it. There is just no way we could do a park for the whole day after driving that long. More power to you guys!! I guess I'm getting old! :rotfl:

We leave from N.O. @ 5am and arrive in WDW around 3pm. That includes bathroom breaks and gas stops. Good luck and have fun!!!!!:goodvibes

As for staying offsite that first night, that's really not so bad. If you find a good location, it's easy to drop your stuff and get to the parks with everyone else. Some places are actually closer to some parks than certain Disney resorts! There is the parking fee of course since I doubt that you'd want to wait for resort transportation.

Well I was asking my darling fiance what he thought we should do & NATURALLY he tells me "whatever you want to do" - geez sometimes I just want a straight answer bc now that I've had so many great suggestions I'm completely OVER thinking every second of our journey to WDW. See that early morning he has a test/interview for diplomatic services in New orleans so he already has to wake up early & travel & of course use his brain for imp stuff THEN drive back & try & pack and rest since he'll do both LAST MINUTE!!! As for me, I'll pack what I can in the car first then try & sleep the rest of the day and get ready to depart around 8 or 9pm. However I know i'll be too excited to really SLEEP. So we really cannot leave right away in order to get to a hotel for overnight rest before driving the rest of the way OR just to get to the parks - due to his morning obligations. I know we'll be terribly exhausted and yes we like to think we're still young but years of school has taken a toll on us. But as soon as our rooms are ready we're going back to CBR & get some rest THEN head back to parks & epcot for EMH! I have considered how zombie-fied we'll be for the second day - but it couldn't be any worse than when we went with his parents last & his mom was like a disney schedule-nazi! We'll double up on cokes & coffee!!!

Any suggestions on night time roadways? Someone previously mentioned take hwy 429? rather than I-4 ... does this matter still at night time? Also are there any tolls we have to pay?

We're out of Memphis and it takes us 13 hours. Well, normally it does. This past December it took almost 17 because of post-Thanksgiving traffic outside of Gainseville.

So we're driving to WDW from Baton Rouge, Louisiana - i put in our address to CBR and google said about 11hrs while Yahoo says a little more than 10hrs. Now obvisouly we'll be making stops & switching drivers ..... we are planning on leaving the night before so we can essentially arrive to check in & hit the parks close to opening time. Now I also realize the hr time change (we'll lose one hr) - so I'm trying to decide on when to depart. It'll basically take 12hrs with stops, switching, time change, etc. If we don't make it for the opening of any park (they all seem to be opening at 9am on apr 30) - do you think we'll be stuck in lots of people traffic at the parks???? Thanks!

Add time for the road work if you are going down I75.

YES, take 429...AWESOME UNCROWDED ROAD! We love that way and once you get close look off in the distance and you can see The Contemporary, Space Mountain and the spires of the castle. GREAT GREAT glimpse! You also get to go under the WDW gate as well..:)

That is such a faster way IMO...We drive from SE Bama and it takes us about 6 hours, 5 and a half if we only stop ONCE. :yay:

Definitely take 429, it brings you in closer to CBR, very close and there is 1 toll for $1.25. I believe it is Exit 8.

Which way do you go? We go across to I-75 and down and it takes us 6.5 to 7, but of course, we hit that road construction on I-75 near Valdosta. Luckily I get to sleep most of the way adn don't see all that mess.

We go from Eufaula then to Albany, Sylvester, Tifton and then hit 75 straight thru....then we hit 429!

My DH has a rather lead foot....and gosh forbid, dont let me drive....that 2010 Camaro hits 95MPH with me!!:lmao:

But really, we usually just stop to get gas, and thats usually in Tifton and Ocala. Somtimes only in Ocala....but we dont stop to eat or anything like that. Our fastest time was like 5 1/2 hours with only one stop right outside of Orlando. :yay:

Oh yea, someone once told us to go to Dothan and then hit I10...that it was faster. NO WAY. such a mistake! It was alot longer of a ride that us going to Albany and 75!

They told me to go through Dothan too and take I-10 to Talahassee. So, bad idea huh? Why is it faster through GA?

Thanks for the tip!

The past two times we drove, we went through Dothan and onto I-10 once and Atlanta (via I-75) the other time. They both took about 9.5 hours each way. Both trips were made during the day; leaving at 8-9am from the starting point. The one thing I don’t like about going through South Alabama is the stop and go due to traffic lights once you pass Montgomery. They’re further apart out of the cities (Dothan, mainly) but when you go through them it’s kind of a mess.
On the flipside, I don’t really like I-20/I-75 simply because of Atlanta traffic (and their policing). Though I’m not a speeder, I have to keep an eye out for ‘the man’ when I’m entering Atlanta metro and the outskirts. Not that I should complain about this, but I think we all probably go a bit over the speed limit.

My wife works in Healthcare and I’m an engineer so we understand being exhausted from ‘all those years of school’, but hey, it’s Disney World. You’re gonna get pumped when you get there. It’s just a matter of how long the adrenaline will last. ;)
If you guys can switch up drivers then I think you’ll be alright. It really comes down to me feeling like I got my money’s worth. If I hit a park at 9am and feel beat by 4pm with 6 hours left on my ticket then I feel like I did myself (and my wallet) a disservice. And you mentioned being very money conscious, so I was throwing that bit out there.

Do you work nightshifts? My wife does. She works 12 hours shifts at the hospital. If we wanted to drive all night she could do it while I slept the whole way. I wouldn’t put that on her, but it’s possible. If you work night shift then you guys are set.
I’m not a morning person by any means, so to be quite honest, I’d prefer to head out mid-afternoon and drive 10 hours straight to be there by 12-1 am. I usually catch a second wind around 10pm on the weekends anyway, so this would fit. The problem is that as soon as I get to the resort I’d fall apart and I wouldn’t be able to wake up early the next morning to make it a full day. That’s why we don’t do that.
It’s simply worked well for us to drive during the day, arrive at night, shop around a couple hours, eat and then go to bed. Then we’re on our normal schedule (don’t forget that you lose an hour) and ready to rock the next day.

As for your fiancé saying he’ll do whatever you want, … that’s just us guys. We just kind of go with the flow. :)

So, a few cons of driving all night are:
1) You’re going to be tired the next day at some point
2) You may feel you’ve ‘wasted’ a day if you don’t stay all day at the park and get your money's worth
3) Having to drive at night when your body is telling you “hey, it’s time to go to sleep” and putting yourself at risk if the driver is physically tired and cannot drive (driving 10+ hours can be exhausting)

Pros:
1) Save money on getting an extra night at (any) hotel
2) If timed right, you can make it to the parks at opening with everyone else at the resort(s)
3) Less Traffic and easier drive

It seems to me that it simply comes down to money/time value. Is it worth an extra (say) $80-100 hotel night to get a good night’s rest at the beginning of your trip? Do you think you’ll be able to be okay with calling it a night early your first night and catching up on sleep so you don’t wreck the rest of your trip? If so, then drive overnight and get there at 6am.

Yeah, that is the way we go. It depends on what time we leave if or where we stop. I have to stop at least once for a potty break, but we don't have to stop for gas with my minivan. DH might ddrive a little faster, but most of th etime I am asleep for most of the ride. If we leave at midnight, we might stop in Ocala for a run through McDonld's for breakfast. If we leave early in the morning, we stop in Albany for a chik-fil-a biscuit and at the Visitors Center in FL for OJ.

The first time we went, we went through Dothan to I-10 and across, it took 12 hours, we went back the same way, never again.

Really bad idea, it takes almost twice as long. Now, we did have to stop for mom more often then we would for just the 2 of us, but it was a miserable drive. Now, the drive for me is pretty miserable anyway, but I don't fly. I watch a movie while DH drives, and sleep if we go down at night.

It is probably because of a more consistent/higher speed limit through GA (watch your speed through Ft. Benning) and you get to the Interstate sooner, I'm really not the one to answer that, and all I know is that is the most miserable drive.

That’s insane!
As mentioned above, we made our ENTIRE trip from Decatur, Al to our Resort in less time than that.
It was approximately the same time to take 65S-I10E-75S as it took to go 65S-I20E-75S: ~ 9.5-10 hours.

You must’ve hit some awful traffic or something for it to have taken 12 hours. Heck, it takes us 4 hours to get to Dothan, so only 6 from there to Orlando.

I've been tossing this idea in my head for a week now & frankly i'm exhausted just from weighing the differences!!! I'm used to staying up all night due to school/work. AND he's used to it too since he did work at a bar DURING law school - so we're good with staying up during the night. I'll prob be a better drive at night since after awhile his eyes get tired quicker than mine. But in my honda civic - i love driving! We plan on switching drivers anyway every 3 to 4 hours. We only need one fill up half way & once we've arrived to WDW and of course we'll drive thru for food as well as have snacks in the car. I guess we're going to suck it up & just GO! No matter what - once the room is ready we're going back for a short (few) hours nap then head back to epcot since it'll be open til 12a - NOT saying we'll actually STAY that late as we may be zombies by then - but we'll go back to see the show & walk the world. Our favorite!

I'm sure you've considered this...

BUT ...couldn't you guys pack the car... head down for his New Orleans thingy...

(You can run to the Mall during his New Orleans Thingy or walmart to stock up on trip supplies....)

Then head on to Orlando ?

Just don't see why you'd have him head an hour towards WDW, back an hour...then another back...when you're practically "on your way"... You could check tripadvisor.com for some cheap hotels if he gets tired...

BUT you'll be wired...and he can rest during the first few hours of the trip...

Just a thought....

Hugs,
Mary

We live about as far away as you do - we are from the mid-mississippi area and have about 12 hours driving time total one way when we drive down. I can tell you we have tried most of the combinations - leave real early to get there at a reasonable time, leave later but arrive late, or leave mid to late afternoon and drive through the night.

Leaving early really sucked. We felt like we started out tired and felt that way the whole way. There ws almost always some traffic slowdown on the way that would cast us some more time. We did this a few times and just did not like the results. you get there and all you want to do and get a bite and go to sleep.

Leaving later was about the same. Somewhat more rested but by the time we got there all you wanted to do is go to sleep. Usually the food courts and restaurnats were closed by then - I remember one trip where all we could find open to eat was the McDonalds in downtown disney. Not our restaurant of choice !

Now we leave mid-afternoon between 4 to 6. We get a small meal early on in the trip - just enough to satisfy our hunger without getting us real full and drowsy. From there we just keep on driving hitting the rest stops and gas stations as necessary. Depending on our time leaving and our stops we usually arrive around 7 ~ 9 pm. We check into our resort and if our room is not available hit the parks. We get that second wind from being "home" again and this often lasts till about our check-in time. We go back to the resort and grab a nap till supper time, get a bite to eat and then hit the park for fireworks. Back to the room afterwards, a regular nights sleep and we are good to go the next morning. We've done this scenario 20+ times over the years and it is what works best for us.

By the way - I agree with the 429 recommendation. However, we do like to take I4 on the way into WDW. My mind says that 429 is better, but my heart always yearns for that grand Welcome to WDW sign as you exit off onto Epcot Drive. We take a vote each time as we get close to Orlando and it is always I4 then Epcot Drive. Nostalgia is a harsh and demanding mistress. ;)

A couple of comments :

Mountain dew is your friend.
Bring pillows and small blankets.
Pull over and rest for a short while if you feel tired. 15~30 minutes of rest can work wonders.
Good radio stations are few and far between. Bring a mp3 player with your favorite books, music, or podcasts. I recommend Disney ones, of course !
Small palstic bag for trash.
Some snacks you like.
I will warn you - they move Tallahassee farther away from Pensacola each trip. :rolleyes1

Have fun and enjoy your trip !

Well I'm a silly goose! Why didn't I think of this??? :rotfl: Well ... three reasons really: (1) I just never considered it! (2) If we left early then we would prob have to spend more $ on hotel :sad1: BUT we'd be better rested then driving in all night then parks all day! :thumbsup2 (3) I'd hate to leave my pups longer than we'd have to ... but what's one more day after leaving them for 7 already!

I'll run this idea by him & see what he thinks ... :)

Now we leave mid-afternoon between 4 to 6. Depending on our time leaving and our stops we usually arrive around 7 ~ 9 pm. We check into our resort and if our room is not available hit the parks.

If we leave after his test & what not, and if it takes about 10.5 hrs from New Orleans then we'd arrive i guess around 10 or 11am - DEPENDING on what time we get out of NO due to his test bc idk how long it'll take! I'm going to run it by him & of course check our budget!

By the way - I agree with the 429 recommendation. However, we do like to take I4 on the way into WDW.

Please can someone refresh my mind on where I'm to take hwy 429? I cannot find it on the map & i'm not good with maps anyway - that's why I have a GPS named Bertha!

Mountain dew is your friend.
(I agree with any caffeinated drinks bc I don't drink them & when I do - it's amazing ... i'm like the energizer bunny!)

Bring pillows and small blankets.
(Yes we have travel neck pillow & blankies)

Pull over and rest for a short while if you feel tired. 15~30 minutes of rest can work wonders.
(I've planned to switch drivers every 3-4 hours for leg stretching & food!)

Good radio stations are few and far between. Bring a mp3 player with your favorite books, music, or podcasts. I recommend Disney ones, of course !
(Well we have our iPods but DUH!!! :headache: why didn't I think of disney tunes!!!! thanks!)

Small palstic bag for trash. ( (Check)

Some snacks you like. (Double Check)

I will warn you - they move Tallahassee farther away from Pensacola each trip. :rolleyes1 (I hate when they move your destination further away & not tell you!!!!!)

Thanks for all of the helpful suggestions!

I have no idea, why it took so long. We did stop in Graceville at an outlet, we stopped at the Welcome Center for a few minutes and we probably stopped somewhere for food. We took 431 to Dothan, then 231 getting off somewhere for Graceville and I think we got on I-10 in Marianna (not sure). Both times we went down that way, it too forever. Seems like if I remember correctly, it took almost 2 hours to go from Tallahassee to I-10 and I wasn't expecting that, I thought it was closer. That is the most boring road in my life and I will NEVER go that way again. The road from Phenix City to Dothan is horrible

It is so much easier to go from Columbus to Albany to Tifton and get on I-75. I still don't like the road from Columbus to Tifton, but it is better than the other way.

429, also known as the Daniel Webster Western Beltway is off the Florida Turnpike (take Exit 267A), it is well marked. It really cuts down on the time it takes to get to WDW (almost zero traffic). I-4 is horrible.
