We are thinking of getting tickets from our friend to travel on United Airlines. I have never used this airline before so was wondering what others thought of their service, seat sizes, customer service.... would it be worth it to do an upgrade on our seats?

I am flying with them for the first time next week, I'll have to let you know....:D

I've flown United a few times and will probably be doing so In June when DH, DD and I go to Vegas. I think their customer service is good - knowledgeable & friendly. The seats and service are on par with other major carriers. If it's a long flight and you're able to upgrade then I'd do so but then I feel that way about any coach seat.

Ive always been happy with United :)

Were flying with them to Hawaii next week so Ill let know how the most recent trip goes.

I actually prefer them though over Delta as a rule.

I've flown them twice once to Germany on a 777 and just last year to Los Angeles on a 757.

Their customer service was pretty decent. The 777 was roomier for our eight hour flight, but the 757 for four hours was a little cramped. People were standing up in the aisles to stretch their legs.

We prefer to fly Delta everywhere. Flying United to Germany was for government travel and to Los Angeles was a last minute trip and Delta did not have any decent fares.

I'm a United Premier member and do a lot of flying.
Customer service: on par with everyone else and better than Hawaiian (I'm doing Hawaii comparisons because you're from Hawaii).
Economy seats: Slightly roomier (just slightly) than Delta and Hawaiian. On par with Aloha. If you fly with a Premier member, your entire party can be upgraded to economy plus which gives you several more inches of leg room.
If you take the red eye from Honolulu to LAX (a lot of eastbound flights leave at night), they no longer have a meal service (they used to serve deli sandwiches in economy) - so bring your own food if you think you'll get hungry. The other day flights still serve meals. All flights have beverage service.
In my opinion, unless you NEED the extra space (because really, that's all that you'll be getting if you do the red eye), it's not worth the bucks to upgrade.
