DH posted this photo I took about 8 years ago after the predicted “two feet of snow” ended. Apparently the weather system shifted last minute and New England got it instead of the mid-Atlantic.
The thing I notice today is that they will go ahead and close a couple days out, where as when I was a kid they waited until the last possible minute to make the call. You'd have to be ready just in case until about 6:30 AM.
I grew up in cold country where we never had school closings -- just trudged through two feet of snow, uphill both ways. Girls were required to wear dresses unless the temp was zero degrees outside.
