I would like to know if anyone can recommend an area to stop for the night just south of Atlanta. Can you tell me anything about exit #64 GA 138? What about exit #47 GA 34? Those are the two exits I'm most interested in. Any suggestions as to which town would be best? Thanks!

Look up the 2 towns on tripadvisor.com to see what people say about the location in general as well as the specific hotels there.

Exit 47 would be a whole lot better/nicer/safer area...:)

Thanks to both of you for your replies.........that was the info. I was looking for. :thumbsup2

If anyone else has any input, it would be appreciated.

I agree. I would NOT stay anywhere north of Newnan (exit 47). Exit 64 is a bit rough and has gone down hill over the past 10 years (I grew up near that area, before it got rough). South of Newnan starts getting a bit rural, and spread out, and you're not going to find much south. Exit 47 has gotten quite a bit more traffic on it in the past few years. My parents live down that way. There are a lot of nice restaurants at that exit. Not real familiar with hotels, since I've never had a need to stay there.

Maybe a dumb question here... but are you on your way to Disney and traveling down I-85? That's going the wrong direction!

Thanks SO MUCH for the info. :worship:
Ha ha I must confess.......I am not traveling to Disney on this trip. We will be heading back to Disney in Nov. (our 3rd trip there this year!). I was able to talk my dh into taking me to the mountains. I haven't been there in over 25 years. I have been to disney at least 32 times and I wanted to visit the mountains so we are giving Blue Ridge a try.

I knew I could get info. fast on these boards. I didn't know where else to ask. :confused3 I was hoping no one would notice that I was not heading to Florida. :rotfl:
Thanks again!

I can help with mountain recommendations as well. I LOVE the mountains. Going hiking this weekend in north Georgia. Then have a week vacation in Waynesville, NC coming up. Great mountain town, close to the blue ridge parkway and the great smoky mountain national park. Its close to the elk herd they released in Cataloochee valley. Really neat!

We are looking into visiting Amicalola Falls. We are not the type do go hiking so we are looking for Falls close to Blueridge that are easy to see without the hike. Any suggestions?

Absolutely. Ill give you some good suggestions when I get to a real computer instead of trying to type a lot on my phone here. Amicalola is a very nice waterfall. Lots of steps if you want to walk to the top!

Ok! If you're going to be in the Amicalola Falls area, you'll certainly want to head over to Dahlonega, GA and walk around the historic square. Lots of nice shops and restaurants, and the gold museum in the old courthouse. I always like to stop and try gold panning up at Crisson gold mine (I seem to find the most in their buckets for the money than at any of the other places). Consolidated Gold Mine is a neat tour through an old underground mine. It's just north of Dahlonega.

Another nice waterfall, not requiring a "hike" is Anna Ruby Falls, just outside of Unicoi State Park. There is another small tourist town nearby called Helen, just south of Unicoi. Helen will cause quite a bit of traffic on the weekends, and it's nice to walk around. It's built to look like an Alpine village. To me, it's gotten a bit run down in the past few years, and I don't bother going much any more.

Another worthwhile drive is to go up to Brasstown Bald. No waterfall, but it's the highest mountain in Georgia. Fantastic views off the top of it. No hiking required there either. They have a shuttle bus that will take to from the parking lot to the summit, where they have a viewing platform and a small museum built on top. Most of the other Georgia waterfalls require either a bit of hiking to or some dirt forest service roads to get to. Some of them are fairly short hikes (Desoto falls-2mi. total, Duke's Creek Falls-2mi. total, Long Creek Falls-2mi hike, but about 15 miles of dirt road, High Shoals falls-very nice, but 2.5 mi. with much elevation change and some dirt roads). If you want any more information, or link a few of my facebook pictures of the falls, I'd be happy to send them along. Most of the stuff I mention above either has websites, or you can find info by googling.

If you venture up into North Carolina, I can give you a couple more REALLY fantastic waterfalls (google Whitewater Falls in NC).

Thank you for taking the time to send me this info. I will look into this further. Thanks again.

What time should we leave Newnan and head north on a Friday morning. We want to avoid the morning rush in Atlanta. So a safe time to leave to head up that way would be I'm guessing 8:30? or later? We will be taking I-285 to I-75. Thanks!

On the surface that sounds pretty good. I would not leave any earlier than that. You can tune to wsb am750 or 95.5 fm to get frequent traffic reports.
