Traveling Disers are lost and adrift somewhere?

CG, I am sooooo sorry. I can't imagine how your friends are coping. Sending lots of prayers to you & your friends. Ugh, I am just sick to my stomach. I am so, so, so sorry.

Oh CG that is awful, having lost someone I was close to at a young age I know how difficult it can be my prayers and symapthy goes out to you and your friends.

To cheer myself up - here are some photos of the area we were last in:

And for Lord of the Rings Fans - here are some shots for you:

rohan_newzealand.jpg

Come and realise the dream of experiencing Lord of the Rings scenery first hand! -- Lothlorien, Amon Hen, Rivendell are found in and around the Queenstown area, which was home to the Lord of the Rings cast and crew for about 18 months during filming.

Southern Crossings is ready to assist those who wish to visit a selection of the film sites. You'll find that many of the guides who introduce these sites to travellers worked as extras or assistants on set and have plenty of inside information to share during the excursions!

The film sets no longer exist but the areas themselves are of such natural beauty, you can understand what attracted Peter Jackson (Director) to choose New Zealand as "Middle Earth". Whether it be by 4WD, jetboat or helicopter, you can view areas such as the Pillars of the Kings, the Road to Mordor, the Elven settlements of Rivendell and Lothlorien, and the Misty Mountains.

Of course, it's not just Queenstown - if you're a hardened LOTR fan, Southern Crossings can incorporate other locations into your tailor-made itinerary - such as Nelson, not only home to more film sites, but also the jeweller who was commissioned to make the "one ring"; Wellington, where the film studio is based and also the theatre where the trilogy debuted in New Zealand; Tongariro National Park (near Taupo) which doubled as both Mordor and Mount Doom, and the Matamata farm which was home to Hobbiton - with a special treat here, as partial sets remain, including Bilbo Baggins home, Bagend.

Castlegazer,
Loved, loved, loved the LOTR shots - one of my favorite books!
The location is truly beautiful.

And, it helped cheered me up. I've been away for a few days for a funeral also, but for an older uncle, and not at all unexpected. Much different than the very tragic story of your young friend. I can't begin to imagine the parents' pain. Sending extra hugs your way.

MATAMATA The town of Hobbiton was built during the middle of 1998 on a piece of farm just outside the Waikato town of Matamata.

Filming didn't start until late 1999, a year after the building was completed, to allow time for the the small village to age and the gardens to grow.

TONGARIRO NATIONAL PARK
The central North Island region of Ruapehu, just south of Lake Taupo, was used for the scenes of Mordor and Mt Doom. Most of the filming was done on the volcano Tongariro for these scenes and the now famous volcano, Ruapehu, was not used at all.

Tongariro has some great walking tracks that take you to the very top of the mountain from which spectacular views of Ruapehu, Ngaruahoe and Lake Taupo can be seen.

KAITOKE REGIONAL PARK (my favorite - too bad it was blue screen)
Kaitoke Regional Park is situated north of Upper Hutt and features steep bush-clad hills that shelter the Hutt River gorge. Rimu, kahikatea, rata and beech forests are features of this park.

It was here that scenes for Rivendell were shot.

THE HUTT VALLEY
The Hutt Valley comprises the two cities of Upper and Lower Hutt situated just north of Wellington.

Scenes from Isengard, Minas Tirith, Minas Mogul and Helm's Deep were shot here.

WELLINGTON
New Zealand's capital city, Wellington is home to Weta Studios. Scenes from Bree, The Shire, Mines of Moria, Cirith Ungol, Weathertop hillside were shot in various locations around the city including the slopes of Mt Victoria in the heart of Wellington city.

MT OWEN
Mt Owen is located in the Kahurangi National Park. The park covers 452,000 hectares and is the second largest park in New Zealand. Located in the northwestern corner of the South Island many of the features seen in Kahurangi National Park are unique to New Zealand.

Mt Owen was used to shoot scenes of Dimrill Dale.

MT SUNDAY
Set in deepest mid-Canterbury, against the backdrop of the Southern Alps, the mystical city of Edoras, with watchtowers and a massive palace, was built on the top of Mt Sunday, just over 70 minutes drive southwest of Methven.

SOUTHERN ALPS
North of Queenstown, the Southern Alps were used as the setting for the Misty Mountains.

TWIZEL
Twizel is a small service town in the Mackenzie Country between Queenstown and Lake Tekapo and was used for filming scenes of the Pelennor Fields.
neartwizel.jpg

ARROWTOWN
The historic gold mining town of Arrowtown, situated on the Arrow River and just outside Queenstown, was used for filming scenes from the Ford of Bruinin.

Arrowtown has a strong café and wine bar culture, award winning restaurants, top of the line shops and even its' own cinema.

GLENORCHY
Glenorchy is situated at the head of Lake Wakatipu just 48kms from Queenstown and is the gateway to many of the Mount Aspiring National Park walks including the Routeburn, Caples, Greenstone, Rees Valley and Dart Valley.

The region was used for shooting scenes of Lothlorien, Fangorn and Amon Hen.

MAVORA LAKES
The beautiful Mavora Lakes in Southland was the setting for 6 sites including Nen Hithoel.

In the movie, hairy-footed hobbits and stench-ridden Orcs can be seen against the backdrop of familiar Te Anau settings.

Mavora Lakes Park is an impressive landscape of mountains, lakes, forest and tussock grassland, recognised as part of the South-West New Zealand World Heritage Area - Te Waipounamu.

TE ANAU
The Kepler Mire was used to shoot scenes of the Dead Marshes.

Kepler Mire is the largest of the wetlands in the Te Anau Basin wetland complex and is the largest known string bog in New Zealand. It is a very rare type of wetland in the Southern Hemisphere as it is found mostly in arctic conifer forest in high northern latitudes.

IDA VALLEY
The Ida Valley, inland from Dunedin, was used for filming scenes from the Plains of Rohan.

Thanks Suzannen. These pics are very cool too - I like now knowing where in NZ they were filming.

 Hello????????

Heeeellllloooooo......hellloooo....hello

Is anyone here?

I worked so hard on those LOTR Pics and descriptions - where is everyone?

Hi there CG

I love the pictures. I have a dear friend who lives in NZ and I enjoy seeing what she sees. Thank you for all your hard work. I bet a lot of people looked at the pictures while browsing through but just forgot to stop awhile.

I have our ship waiting for us for next week Princess has our suites ready we can fly into NY Friday to get ready maybe see a show while we wait..

Alright CG, sorry I hadn't responded, but I've been searching all over this place for someone.....

WHERE IN THE HECK IS ARAGORN??????

One of the things on my short list to do before I croak is to see a Broadway play ON Broadway. I go the touring ones that hit Indianapolis but it is not the same thing. My dear friend, Rider, has kindly taken pictures and videos while walking down the street and that has just whetted my appetite even more.

I am in for a play, any play. Muscials are my favorite though. Am willing to do two a day. Will go without sleep and/or food if necessary. (smile)

CG, the kind words are appreciated after I got royally flamed in another forum this morning. Funny thing was that it was someone who was saying that I was not allowing someone else to have their opinion and I should shut up as they did not like my opinion. I find such things quite funny. I absolutely LOVE differing opinions, that is how I learn things. Only opinions that I cannot learn from are those of fools who think their opinion is the one that counts. (smile) I have never met anyone who knows everything about everything and doubt I ever will. Sure know that I are not the one though. Had to peruse the NZ pics again.. I do not know how you have the time to do so much extensive research and post pics and all. Am glad that you and others do though.

SG/Linda

I am really not sure how you could have missed him - Viggo is so unmissable! Here I will blow up some of the photos so you can see that he was in them all the time:

I've been away because I've been desperately trying to visit each and every set in NZ from LOTR before Ed makes us set sail. (I was even supposed to have high tea with the elves in Rivendell (and with Viggo) - don't I wish!)

CG (and Ed) we really do appreciate your hard work and in the words of Wayne (aka Mike Myers) "we're not worthy."

SG, I can't believe you got flamed this morning for expressing an opinion about an opinion on someone else's opinion...folks on the DIS getting testy about someone with a differing opinion? Nah, I never saw that happening here, what with all the pixie dust flying around. (Honestly, though - I've gotten scared to even post on quite a few threads these days!!!) Sorry that happened to you.
Suzannen

suzannen , never fear. I am the oldest of 8 kids, mother of two and grandma of 6. Have heard or seen most everything and no way am I going to let a very vocal and tiny minority scare me. LOL The DIS is a great place to be and if there is an occasional bump along the road it just serves to remind me that the vast majority of the people here, and everywhere, are wonderful and makes me appreciate them all the more.

BTW, feel free to disagree. No problem for me. (grin) I firmly believe in being able to disagree WITHOUT being disagreeable.

I am off to picnic beneath a waterfall and hope to see a kiwi or two along the way. Amazing country NZ. Land of volcanoes also. Nature at its most wonderous and like its people, wild, untamed and vastly interesting.

SG/Linda
