Traveling by plane from NY - winter ? Nervous of snow/ice

OK - planes are a safe way to travel.
But I am nervous of flying from NY (ALB) to Orlando (MCO)
in March - when NY can still be cold and have snow & ice.

Please advise me.

Do it all the time out of Albany County Airport (International?, yeah right!) We usually go down to WDW in January or February. Never had a cancellation due to snow or ice. Sometimes they have to deice the plane, but then we are off. Been going since 1987.

We fly from Ohio every February (President's week) down to Orlando, the last 7 years and have never been delayed or canceled from Cleveland's airport or Pittsburgh,Pa airport.

Hey, I'm from MN. We know all about snow and ice!

When I fly in the winter, I try to get as early as flight out as possible. That way if there are delays or problems, I can usually still get out of town the same day.

I fly to Orlando a few times a year and the only time I ever had a probelm was the great blizzard of 2000. We got stuck at LaGuardia all day and then got sent home because they wouldn't let any flights take off. Missed New Year's Eve in Disney World, but I think it was better safe then sorry at that point. By March, you should be ok. don't worry.

I've flown from Pittsburgh in December, February & March and worry about weather. I worry more about getting to the airport, so I always have an alternate plan if the weather is bad - a town car service. I was worried last February because a big snow was supposed to happen while I was gone on a weekend trip, I ended up parking in the airport garage for $16 a day for 4 days just so my car would be covered instead of outside. Only 1 time we had to be de-iced and that was in March.

Early Flight Times--Very Important

Non-Stops--If you can get one, go for it!

If you have to connect, book a connection as far SOUTH as you can. You stand a better chance of avoiding bad weather that way.

I fly weekly out of MHT or BOS all year long, and our weather is about as icky as yours. Just remember that they are not going to take off if conditions are adverse. They are not that foolish. You won't get off the ground in Orlando if the weather is bad in Albany, and if it gets bad while you're in the air, they'll divert you. If it's really cold, they'll de-ice the plane before take-off. That does not mean there is ice, just preventing it.

All told, I would WAY rather be in a plane than in my car during the winter. The airports know how to handle snow & ice much better than the other drivers out there.

So don't worry at all about safety, worry a tiny bit about the schedule, focus on the fun you'll have on vacation.

That used to make me very edgy, but, then I learned about deicing the plane and I sort of got over it. They won't fly unless it is safe. Hang in there and relax.

However, what I didn't realize is how COLD it is at that altitude. I was on a big plane once from Cincinatti to Orlando and they had the monitors and were showing real-time our speed, altitude, and the outside temperature.

Although, I don't remember specifics, it was in the minus 50 degrees Celcius range. BRRRRRRRR

I've flown in and out of ALB at least 50 times, often in rain, sleet, snow, and ice.

They de-ice and plow, and I never felt uncomfortable there. In fact becaues they're used to it, they seem to handle it much better than more Southern airports that aren't.

I wouldn't worry too much about safety, but I also wouldn't book HDD for the day you arrive...
