Traveling after Covid-19?

I was thinking about it today. Do you think after we are finally given the "all clear" on the COVID-19 outbreak, do you think the travel industry (not just Disney but in general) will experience a boom? Or do you think people will still be nervous about traveling? I have also thought about the economic impact that the virus is going to have the longer that this goes on--i.e. people may not be able to afford to travel after this. What are your thoughts?

We have a cruise booked for February 2021. Booked 6 months ago. Concerned about it even now. Hoping we can go to our beach house rental in August.

I do not agree with Trump's analysis that the economy will come "roaring back" after this. It will take long time for normalcy to return, and those who have lost their incomes will not necessarily find their jobs magically restored and all businesses gleefully reopening their doors, esp. small businesses. Money will go toward essentials rather than trips. I know we are being very cautious with spending, and the CA shelter in place actually precludes us from spending much. I think the effects of our new normal will last at least until September.

Old and sick folks will likely need to hunker down until we can secure a vaccine and/or effective treatment. Hopefully warm weather will significantly slow the transmission but it will likely ramp up during the fall and winter months. Just my thoughts.

I still have tentative camping trips in May. I’ll see what happens by then. We don’t have a lot of cases here.

hmmm - that is a interesting question. I guess it will depend on those who have been able to keep their jobs secure and not eaten into their savings may come out of this ready to spend. If we can stay the course and come out on the other side I think we will be looking for a good deal on a trip we have been kicking around for some time - a great deal/discount might be what tips us to go now vs. waiting another year or two to go.
Of course, by "now" I mean when we get the all clear -
I kinda see travel as a way to stimulate the economy as it tries to bounce back.
Pretty sure we will try for a long weekend at Universal this fall as well.

Now - if things don't start to turn around in the next month or so, I think that I may rethink my spending in the short term/next year on travel.

Our money manager does. Buying travel related stocks. I think there will be so much pent up demand for travel when we have a sense of normalcy again. We can’t wait to start traveling again.

Depends on the overall economic aftermath of our current situation. My guess is that if the economic stimulus program doesn't work (and as currently written I doubt it) the hospitality industry will still be in horrendous shape. There will be great deals for those with the funds to spend on it but the average Joe will not be spending money on recreation. "Staycation" will come back into the vernacular and Fed, state and county/municipal campgrounds will be full.

PS Boeing just shut down it's operations in WA which will be a major hurt for the state and the nation. No idea what temporarily means in these times.

In my 70s and can’t wait until it’s safe to travel again.
We cancelled a May cruise for credits that are good through 2021. I would have preferred real money, but RCCI isn’t giving it back.
We voluntarily rescheduled an April trip to Italy and France to June. I expect that to be canceled and will decide what to do when I know the options.
Still pending is a cruise Rome and Greece round trip in September. Just hanging loose on that one. Right now celebrity is requiring a physician certification for 70+ cruisers, my doc won’t sign it. It’s unclear what that would mean regarding refunds etc. Worry for a later date.

It might? I know for myself, I'm itching to book a trip to Disneyland once we get the green light across the board for it. However that is secondary to flying out to see my parents, my brother and his family, along with some of my cousins in NY (or them coming out here). I might want to explore a trip to FL to see those relatives as well.

So there might be an increase in travel not for tourism purposes, but rather, families getting together.

I am 50/50 on this, itching to get something booked, but a 4 week lockout has meant that DHs company is having everyone take that time as unpaid leave. I work with international students so I am not sure how much longer I will have a job....not sure I am going to have the money for travel at the other end of this

I can tell you the fear of flying now isn't as bad as the fear of flying was after 9/11. That was worse for fear.

As for economically, I think it will be worse now. You may want to go, but you won't have the funds.

Some people are itching to get back out there but I think that will be outweighed by the people who are afraid to book while there are still active cases and the people who will not be able to afford to travel because of lost income. It will be several years before things return to normal.

I read somewhere recently that the Spanish Flu killed more people in the Fall than the previous Spring.

I think it depends on several things, most of which revolve around how prolonged the disruption is.

First of all, there is a good chance that large parts of the travel industry will not survive. There may be airline bankruptcies, including complete liquidations. That's happened before in difficult economic times. The cruise industry, which has been exploding in popularity worldwide, may have some very difficult times that not all survive. The hotel industry, much of which is made up of locally-owned franchises, will be hard-hit.

And secondly, of course, what will the effect on tens of thousands of other businesses be? If this thing drags on, many businesses will simply go away -- bankrupting both owners and employees in the process.

The US has enjoyed 10 years of uninterrupted economic growth, but if we don't work together as one country, that could well come to an ugly end.

Well, we have hotel reservations in San Francisco for July that we plan to still use, provided the hotel is fully operational and restaurants and stores and museums have fully reopened.

We live close to Disneyland and we will be back there as soon as they open the gates again.

Our income is stable and guaranteed for the duration of this situation and we have a sizable savings account at this point, so finances won't be a hindrance to travel or recreational spending. Just waiting for the green light.

If I still have a job, I will travel as soon as it’s feasible. I hate being at home and usually travel at least two long weekends a month, and I get six weeks of vacation that I use every day of. If I lose my job I will be stuck at home and I won’t be happy. I am not big on day trips to Disney. I want the whole bubble experience!
