Travelex are having a sale tomorrow between 12 and 1pm, I can't see anywhere what their reduced rate will b, but I've bought from them during a sale before and it was really good, so may be worth checking out tomorrow if you're thinking of buying some $$ :D

Hope this helps someone!

I believe the rate is 1.5955 but the site has crashed, not a great rate FairFX been offering $1.60 since yesterday.

Fairfx rate is not for cash though Wayne, only for the card ;)

It is rubbish, though, that the site has crashed - with only 10 minutes of the 'sale' left, it's not going to do anybody much good really.

I couldn't get on the site at all, I tried constantly for an hour. A couple of times I managed to connect but it didn't load properly and then chucked me out! I suppose I can take comfort from the fact that the rate wasn't that good.

Travelex is now down at 1.5825. FairFX is 1.5941. First Direct is 1.59789, so I think I may order some.

ETA: FD appears to offer free next day delivery on any amount (minimum order is £100). FairFX want £6 for amounts under £750!

Yes, Fairfx cash rate is different to the card rate (although only minimally different). When you factor in the delivery charge, it makes other options more promising. Had I been able to get onto Travelex, I would have ordered some from them at the 'sale' rate.

I believe, for First Direct, it's only free delivery if you order more than £250 (according to Money Saving Expert) but free for any amount if you have a FD account.

I think the MSE page is out of date. There doesn't appear to be a delivery charge. There is a commission charge for telephone orders, but not for online orders. Interestingly the service is provided by Travelex.

I noticed that and I was just coming back to say that I couldn't find anoything on the FD site that indicated there was a delivery charge :confused3

I didn't use the travelex sale as I only want $600 cash so didn't want to pay £1.95 for delivery, thanks for the tip off I'm going with FD :D

Where do you find out First Direct's rates? I bank with them and I think highly of all their services EXCEPT for foreign exchange. I rang them up to order dollars once and found that their rates were a good 3 to 4 cents lower than Travelex and the likes. It suddenly made sense why I couldn't ever find their rates published online - they were terrible! Maybe they've realised this and started to become a lot more competitive?

Care to expand, g/a?

Put £100/$154 on a card to give my neice at xmas in august 2 years ago, put the card in my suitcase, as my neice lives in USA, and never touched it again, had a good bonus in dec so went to put another £50, and was told only $3 left when i asked why, it turned out someone had used the card to order a subsription on it, when I contacted Travelex they said it was my fault for not telling them in 60 days, I explained I had not even touched the card since I opened it as was for my neice at xmas.

I then looked into this further, it turns out after the card was empty, 13 yes 13 more attempts were made to take money from this card all declined by Travelex and yet Travelex never once contacted me to ask why the card was empty.

So use this company at your own risk.:mad:

I assume you're referring to the Cash Passport? If you bought the card 2 years ago, there would have been charges made to the card anyway as there is a $3.50 per month inactivity fee if the card has not been used for more than 12 months. What I don't understand, though, is why you woul dhave activated the card if it was for your niece and you had no intention of using it. If it hadn't been activated, nobody else would have been able to charge anything to it anyway :confused3

Sorry you had a poor experience. I don't think you can technically blame Travelex for it though.

ETA: On the Cash Passport website, it says that in the event of a disputed transaction, you should contact them (within 13 months) so not sure why Travelex said 60 days http://www.cashpassport.com/1/en/uk/Contact-us/Disputed-Transactions/

When I first called them they told me 60 days, but on new accounts now it was longer, I never used it only to put the £100 on never gave any info to anyone, so yes I do blame them.

How would you explain the 13 denied attempts to obtain money from an empty card, but never contact the card holder. if they had I would have been able to dispute within the 60 days. would you have been happy with that. you want to use them fine.

I would never touch them again, its not about the money £100 is nothing, its the poor response I got that annoyed me, in one conversation they asked me had we had a break in, I told them you think someone broke in and went through my suitcase to find my holiday wallet take all the details from the card put it back and leave the $1000 plus dollars in cash behind, I could not believe it when she said its possible, nearly wet myself laughing.

I think you missed my point. I said, if you had no intention of using it, why activate it? If you hadn't activated it, there wouldn't have been a problem. Personally, I wouldn't use the Cash Passport again because of the inactivity fee but never had any other problems when I did use it.

You also need to accept the fact that this is completely different to ordering cash through Travelex for delivery or collection, which is what this thread was originally referring to.

Anyway, like I said, sorry for your experience. You have every right to choose not to use them again.

Sorry for trying to warn people of this company. you do what you wish.

No need to be sorry - please make sure you're not misquoting me though ;)

I did say I wouldn't use them again personally (see above) and I did say you had every right not to use them again yourself (also above).
