Traveler’s Checks and Minors

My daughter is headed to WDW with her school class (how come I never had these kind of trips when I was a kid?). I was going to get her traveler’s checks and was curious about how she goes about cashing them (I’m assuming my bank will issue them to her). She will be 14 years old and will only have a school id. Should that suffice? Also, where can she cash them?

Almost everywhere in WDW will take them. Some of the carts and small stands (like popcorn) won't. I used them last month on our trip. I needed my picture ID for them. Never had a problem. Personally I liked the security they gave me. I got mine for free at AAA (if you have a membership).

She should have no problem using them. We took a whole bunch last week with us and as the last poster said all you need is pic ID. We really had no problem no one rejected them and it is better then carrying actual cash.

I don't for the life of me understand why they need any ID one of the ideas of travelers checks was that your signature which is at the top of each one WAS you ID as you had to sign it again and the signatures had to match.
Now suddenly you need addition picture ID????
what is they point of that.
Oh Well nothing you can do I guess.

Additional security. Some people's signatures are easy to copy, others aren't. Also, if the signatures are close, but not exact, you can get by. Having a photo ID just guarantees that the person signing the check is the right person.

My daughter used them last summer and she never had to show an id (she was 13). But I guess have them take their school id just in case.

What if you don't have a picture ID? We'll have our passports, but we don't want to carry that around with us. Also, when I called AAA a few months ago, they told me that they don't deal with travelers checks anymore that they use visa check cards. I would rather use the travelers checks, it is easier to keep track of the spending.

I'm sorry they were they visa checks. However, they worked exactly the same as travelers checks. They were "insured", they were accepted everywhere. They are the very same concept. Only they have the Visa logo on them.

I've given my teen DS travelers checks to use before. He didn't have a problem cashing them. I do suggest getting the 2 person travelers checks in your child's and your name so if there are any checks left over, you'll be able to use them yourself! Only one of the 2 people has to sign the check to make it valid.

I've used travellers' checks a few times now and I've never had to show ID. I always have my license with me, but I've never been asked. AAA did say that my sister's school ID would work just fine. As long as the school ID has a picture on it, it's acceptable. Traveler's checks are definitely the best way to go. Just make sure she writes down which ones she uses and where, so that she knows how many have to be replaced if they get lost. Since they always come with a receipt, my mom usually holds on to the receipt, so that if there's a problem she can call it in and get them replaced for me. Also, it keeps the receipt separate from the checks so that that won't get lost too. We've never had a problem, it's just a precaution.
