Has anybody bought a one way fare during a seat sale and then waited to buy the return fare later and maybe on another airline?

I can get a great fare right now going but the return price really stinks.

I've done my last two trips to the US the way you described. I pretty much price all our trips by one way fares. This gives me flexibility with price, plus travel time. I usually book the trip all at once, once I find something I'm happy with.

This year we flew to Orlando on Delta Airlines and returned with Air Canada. Last year we flew to Los Angeles on Air Canada and returned on America West.

I am thinking of doing this for our trip in January. I'd like to take advantage of getting into MCO early flying Sunwing and then return to YYZ on Westjet because I am afraid the Sunwing flight might be leaving too early as we'll be coming off of DCL that same morning. :thumbsup2

I'm using 3 in October. I have a meeting in NY so I'm flying from Saskatoon to NY on Air Canada, flying from NY to Orlando on Jet Blue, and Orlando back to Saskatoon on Westjet. It saved alot of $$$'s but it's a killer on time(planning). Note that some airlines from the US don't have great 1 way fares, only great round trip fares. Also I noticed that when the seats do go on sale you have to book asap! I was going to book a flight for a friend to join me on my solo trip in Oct, but when I checked flight prices before dinner it was $514, after dinner when she decided she could go, flights had gone up to $945!!! Have a price in mind and book when you feel it's close enough not to worry about the $$$'s anymore.
Just my thoughts :confused3

To me the only advantage of a round trip over two one-ways is a lower fare.

But it is usually a bad idea to fly two airlines (using two separate tickets) each way when making a connection. In this case if you miss the connection it is not considered missing a connection but rather missing the second flight outright.
