I am wondering what time we should leave San Diego in order to reach John Wayne airport for a 12:30 p.m. flight on a Sunday in October. We will be staying in the Sea World area of San Diego and we will also have to allow time to return our rental car. Any advice would be appreciated!

Google maps driving directions have it at 83 miles, 1 hour, 25 minutes. You can use the traffic feature on Google maps to help determine the history of travel time for any given day of the week and time.

You should also check SNA website for security check times for Sundays prior to your departure time.

So the true answer is, do you like to get to the airport 5 hours ahead of time like me or do you enjoy the excitement of running for the plane?

Hope this helps. Enjoy San Diego and Sea World.

I'd leave no later than 9 am. It will take you about an hour and 15 minutes to get up there, but then you need to drop off the rental car; and as I remember it, it takes about 20 minutes to shuttle from the rental car area back to the airport.

Also, the traffic from San Diego to OC is really bad on a Sunday afternoon, so the later you leave, the more traffic there will be.

Thanks for your advice!

I definitely don't "enjoy the excitement" of being in a rush! I would say I definitely lean more towards being an early bird like yourself.

Thanks for the advice about the time it will take with the rental car. This is exactly the type of tips that I am looking for!

If you have two or more persons in the car, you can pick up an HOV lane at San Juan Capistrano that will take you all the way to John Wayne airport and Disneyland Resort, if you're going that far... My wife and I can get from San Diego to Disneyland in 90 minutes most of the time.
