We are looking into buying travel insurance for our cruise in February, but have never bought it before. I did a search on Google and found a lot of companies that offer travel insurance. Can any of you experienced travelers give me some advice as to what I should look for as far as coverage and price?

Thanks for your help!

My MIL is a travel agent, and for us is recommending this:

http://www.travelguard.com/ - check out Products, Policy Assist.

She notes the following for us:

We usually recommend this policy for several reasons._ It is independent-if travel vendor goes chapter 11 you have coverage; more extensive coverage; higher limits; more reasons for cancellation; pre-existing conditions (asthma!) are covered; usually less expensive.

There is trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage._ Weather is usually a covered reason for cancellation/interruption._ They maintain a 24/7 phone-national and international and a live travel dept to help with alternate plans if necessary._ Disney would, of course, be responsible for your travel plans but a backup is always good._ I have to double check with Disney re their policy in case of weather.

Don't know if that helps... :)

We have used Access American through Disney our last 2 cruises. We were quarantined our 2nd cruise, and access america was great about settling the claim. For the next cruise, I have it currently in the price with DCL, but will probably cancel it with DCL and buy it directly once I've booked my flights. It will save a bit of $, and cover the flights and hotels which are booked separate from DCL.

I used AccessAmerica.com also.

They were (last I heard) the company that DCL actually uses, so if you go with them directly you truly eliminate the middle man.

Not only must they be reputable if DCL uses them, but they also have a family plan where the kids are covered FREE!. (this family plan was hard to find, but I knew it existed due to these boards).

I called the 800-number, they got me the right plan and what had been a $396 charge with DCL dropped to $167.

AND since I had booked the air separately I got it covered with this plan for no extra charge.

Wouldn't leave home with out it!

look at www.insuremytrip.com they list several of the above mentioned companies and you can compare one to another. Their prices are almost identical to the individual web sites or you can call/contact the company you decide on after looking at them all together.

Has anyone ever relied on the insurance gained by paying in full with a credit card? I know DH's credit card that we used offers some sort of insurance, but have to check out the fine print. What are these likely NOT to cover, that separate travel insurance would cover?

Leave it to a mick to find the best deals around. Lucky dog!!!!

Hey, any chance you and Rieann can meet us for 2005 the "North to Alaska" Cruise?????

Rae

Rae:

Rieann's parent's are marking their 50th anniversary that summer, and we WILL be on an Alaska cruise (of their choosing, since they're paying).

With any luck, It wil be the same cruise!!!

(Than I can hang out with you two. I told Rieann once I liked HER in laws more than I liked MY in-laws. Think about it, than you'll know why I got smacked after).

They almost never cover trip cancellation insurance due to health reasons, etc. They will almost always cover due to the bankruptcy of the carrier.

I don't worry about the latter with DCL (the air is another story), but rather the former.

Your results may vary, so please check.

Jim - that's great about their anniversary! And about the cruise. Okay, let's keep this in mind when we make our plans -

Funny about the in laws - yes, she should smack you again for repeating it!
