Mother in law just paid $1140 for 30 days due to her advanced age. I was surprised by that amount. I think I paid $350 for a year through CAA and have to return every 30 days for a day which I did. The times I was delayed it could be topped off for about $4 a day over the phone. Was surprised by this amount.

Very difficult to obtain insurance on the phone. Two hours and no answer with TD, then 3 hours and hung up with Global. Ended up doing online with Manulife even though their info online was not very clear. Never paid so much in my life. Crazy!

Your MIL paid for comprehensive insurance. Meaning it is a more intricate of a review of health and therefore - if everything was answered 100% on point - it will be safer if it needs to be used.

And sometimes older people or people with pre-existing conditions are simply shut out of those cheaper plans within the first couple of questions.

CAA - and many other simpler plans from the banks- is not overly investigative when filling it out. So say I went in and got that great deal, which I have with the CAA yearly. Well wonderful if I do not have any issues of health. And wonderful if I never need their help if I do. But people do not read the fine print. Here is an example - say I was taking a medication that was recently changed for any reason. It could even be a lower dose. They can easily use that as a reason for the plan to be null and void. It is not explained as such, unlike the higher more comprehensive plans, but is often in the fine print.

It is harder to be denied at claim time when the application is more thorough and pre-existing conditions are 100% covered. That always means higher costs.

Insurance is what it is - I was unable (and am still unable) to get mortgage insurance due to a goiter I had removed in 2010 (they ask about goiter/tumours on the application form). That's how they keep the rates reasonable for others, by exclusion of the high risk. It's also why I'll fight to the death to keep universal health care (despite it's sometimes severe shortcomings).
