Can anyone recommend a good (budget friendly) travel insurance company? We have a non-Disney trip we are hoping to take this summer, but one of our parents has health issues. Also, does trip insurance cover cancellation if it is to care for a family member not on the travel itinerary?

Thanks!

I use a site that compares all of the options--disboards won't let me post it but if you google "travel insurance compare" it should be right at or near the top. The first time I used them I called because I had questions and they were great. They have tons of options. I buy Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector because the kids are free, but what's best really depends on your needs.

Yes, going through what havaneselover suggests above is a great way to see and compare many travel insurance products at once. You may typically add 'cancel for any reason' to a policy for a small fee, it is an additional rider on the policy. If you are not adding that feature then pay close attention to pre-existing conditions and see how they are treated within the policy. There are many products out there to choose from and you can customize a policy to fit your needs. Both times we have used the site we ended up purchasing a policy through Travelex.

What portions of the trip are non refundable? I would just book hotels and airline tickets that allow you to get your money back if you cancel.

Flights, cruise fare, many hotels when it's close to check in day. Even Disney hotels have a penalty if you cancel less than 5 days before check in. Some private tours have to be prepaid.
My MIL had a heart attack the morning we were to fly down to FL for a Disney cruise. Cruise fare has to be paid 75 days before sail date, earlier for some itineraries such as Alaska or Med, and that's when cancellation penalties start.
Also when it comes to cruising, if you have to be helicoptered off the ship for a medical emergency, without trip insurance it can bankrupt a family. With dh's family history (his gf died at 50 of a massive heart attack) I don't want to take any chances. Mostly, it's about peace of mind. If I have to deal with a family catastrophe, I don't want to compound it by having to worry about money lost over a cancelled/interrupted vacation.

Another instance when it's nice to have insurance is when travelling during winter months. If there's snow back home and your return flight is cancelled, insurance will cover your expenses (up to coverage limits) while you're stuck at your destination. That includes hotel, meals, laundry expenses, etc. This happened to my parents with snow and to my sister while in Barbados while Miami was having a hurricane and their flight connected in Miami. My sister didn't have insurance and it was a financial hardship to extend their trip by 3 days.

Also, let's say you get a stomach virus while on a 14 day tour of Italy. If you have to stay in your hotel room and miss 2 days of touring, trip interruption coverage applies and you'd get $ for the time that you missed.

OP, I second the website havaneselover recommends. I have used them many times. Kids are free when traveling with parents. Our policy for a $5k cruise was only $180 for great coverage. There were cheaper plans for around $140.
Usually in order for pre-existing conditions to be covered, the insurance has to be purchased within 15 days of initial booking. This isn't just for your own pre-existing health conditions, but also those of your family members that are not traveling with you. They are super helpful on the phone so just call and ask and they can guide you. They have multiple policies to choose from so it's easy to find just the right coverage.

We found CSA TRAVEL PROTECTION on this travel insurance rating site: http://travel-insurance-review.toptenreviews.com/

CSA is the # 1 rated. Its affordable. CSA has multiple plan types: http://www.csatravelprotection.com/plan-details

There are 2 main buckets of coverages:
1. PRE TRIP: cancellation coverage. THe Luxe plan includes Cancel For Any Reason--added cost. But

2. IN TRIP: medical, evacuation, lost baggage, flight delays, missed connections.

I found it very helpful to call CSA to speak with an agent who can advise you on what coverages you need based on your situation.

BTW--we used CSA for our DCL cruise last summer.

thank you all so much! Our airline tickets were quite expensive (going to Europe family of 5). Our hotel can be canceled up to 24 hours ahead of time. And a few tours I booked are also able to be canceled 24 hours ahead of time. But the unexpected doesn't happen on a schedule :)

I looked at the link suggested and Travelex looks best for us and it is a known name so I'll most likely go with that one.

Thanks to this thread I just picked up coverage for our May 2017 Bermuda cruise. My husband broke his foot 2 weeks before our WDW trip last year. If this happened while we were to travel internationally, we would have to cancel. It was very affordable..$91.00 for a 5 day cruise. The kids were free.

Stuff happens. Back in March we had a 3 nt Disney cruise with 2 nts stay at BWV, with 1 day at MK where we planned to meet up with our friends and cruise together. We never even got to MK. After flying down after school, getting to BWV around 10 pm, we slept then went to breakfast at Ohana. While waiting for our table, we got a call from a neighbor asking if we were ok. Dh laughed and said "Sure, we're in Disney World!" :cool1:

A huge tree had fallen on our house, pretty much slicing it half, falling so hard the branches coming down through the kitchen ceiling pierced our fridge door, taking it right off the hinges. :scared1: The chimney bricks got wacked into the backyard like the tree was playing T-ball. Smooshed the furnace in the attic and jostled the pipes so much we had 4 gas leaks.:faint:
Ds19 was home and thought it was an earthquake. He didn't even realize the full extent of the damage or what really happened and didn't want to bother us on vacation.
The neighbor took several pics and texted them to dh. Needless to say, we had to skip the day in MK and the cruise. We had already paid for the dining plan and were starving so we figured might as well eat a good breakfast. I spent most of the breakfast calling my dad to go check on ds19 and help him gather some clothes and our cat The police & firemen came to the house because of the damage to gas & electric to meet our utility company and shut it all down. While this was happening (around 10am) I was changing our flights to 2:30 that afternoon.
When Mickey came to our table, I recall even being slightly annoyed that he interrupted me, but tried not to show it. :sad1: We grabbed a cab back to BWV and packed in record time, checked out and grabbed a cab to MCO. While waiting at the gate, we normally would be eating lunch but instead dh called our tree guy and a general contractor while I called our homeowners insurance.
While on the plane going home, I wished dh a happy birthday.:love2: Ds15 says that was the most expensive breakfast ever. (12 hours in WDW spent just to sleep and eat bf).:headache:

Anyway to make a long story short, we have done several big, expensive cruises in the past and since this was just a quickie, 3-nt I didn't bother getting insurance. Well, I never will do that again. My TA did go to bat for us with DCL to try to get a credit for a future cruise and we had to write a letter explaining everything. I had to fax them a copy of the insurance report, like 30 pages long and over $60k in damage, not including the cost of living in a hotel for 6 weeks.
This was to be our 18th Disney cruise and I guess they felt sorry for us because they did eventually give us a credit but they really didn't have to. We were soooo grateful that they did, with that credit we booked a 7 nt in August. So their good will still comes back to them; they still make their money back and we're all happy. :goodvibes :grouphug:
I absolutely bought trip insurance this time. :thumbsup2 :cloud9:

Wow, I remember reading your story in the debt dumpers thread. So glad your ds was safe! We are like neighbors...lol.. I live in Voorhees. I believe you live in Haddon township or somewhere around there. I bought trip insurance for our 3 night dream cruise coming up in August. It's hurricane season so it was a no brainier. This time I was waffling with the Bermuda cruise.. Bermuda is not like Haiti. Plus it's May, it's not like the weather is likely to be bad. After reading this thread, I decided to go ahead and buy. If only for the peace of mind. Thanks for all of your sage advice.

We're completely healthy, but I won't cruise without it because medical evacuations can cost a fortune. And I had a friend who took her family and parents on the Dream and her mom got hurt in Nassau and she and her parents had to fly home. You really just never know what could happen and insurance is pretty darn cheap.

Oh, you are close! We're in Cherry Hill and still surrounded by a million (ok, maybe just hundreds) of big, old trees. I try not to be neurotic looking at every leaning tree but yes, peace of mind is priceless. Have a great cruise!! :goodvibes

From your original post, it looks like you are most concerned about a possible cancellation due to the health of a family member who is NOT traveling with you. This is one area where the coverage of different policies can vary significantly, as some policies will not provide coverage if the health issue causing the cancellation or delay is a pre-existing condition, while others will not even ask (which also means you shouldn't have to provide as many stacks of health records for that non-traveling family member).

Before you settle on a policy, make sure it provides the coverage you need. And even if you just purchased, most policies have a cool down period which would allow you to cancel and get your money back.

Also, you may already have some coverage for cancellations, delays and even medical evacuations depending on which credit card you used to buy your plane tickets.

Best of luck in your decision. -- Suzanne

Considering that hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov 30, most of our cruises have been during hurricane season. Funny that the only hurricane to affect our cruises was one that came to NJ (Sandy).
Even then it only affected us because the annual teachers convention in AC was cancelled so our district decided to open schools those days to start making up the days missed from Sandy. My kids ended up missing 4 days of school instead of 2.

We were without power for 1 week. I also now work down the shore so it would impact me big time!

Wow, we didn't lose power but some of our schools did and there were just too many trees down in streets for kids to be out walking and school buses trying to get around them all.

Overall hurricanes hitting NJ are pretty rare. I usually worry more about having rainy weather if we're on the fringes of the storm, having to miss scheduled ports or having to debark in a different city than originally planned. Also it's possible the ship can't return to home port until maybe a day or 2 later so it's another reason to have insurance. This happened a lot in 04/05 when FL was hit with a lot of hurricanes.
