Has anyone purchased the travel insurance? I looked on the website but I couldn't find any information on the cost. Just looking for a rough idea -- our trip would be for 5 days. Total points used would be about 250.

Thanks

Thanks so much -- I was clearly not awake when I was looking for this!!! Appreciate your help

Please post back on this thread what you find out about the trip insurance and exactly what it will pay. I have looked into this and if I understand it correctly, if your trip is booked on DVC points, it will only reimburse you about $5/pt to cover your MF's. I think it will reimburse you for other OOP expenses depending on the reason for your cancellation but not for the cash value of the room reservation. Please let us know what you find out.

We bought insurance because we always fly and it covers the flights as well as things like luggage.

It does not mention covering the value of points for the reservation. The coverage portion says it would pay for "unused, non-refundable Maintenance Charges* or dues value of Points and/or applicable Exchange Fees for the unused portion of the confirmed Timeshare Trip". This would be subject to the terms of the policy (qualifying reason for cancellation, etc).

It does cover things like airfare, baggage and some medical expenses.

The coverage contract is online at the DVC site.

I doubt we would buy this - we'll probably use frequent flyer miles and could redeposit those (for a fee) if we had to cancel.

The insurance has changed, it's no longer $5 per point reimbursement. It's reimbursement of the dues for the points lost.

I have personally found that the travel insurance is not a good choice unless you are using it to cover a large point vacation that is at the end of your use year so that your points would be lost if not used. If you are traveling at the beginning of your use year you could just re-schedule the vacation as long as you did not suffer a reason to cancel after you arrived.

I investigated the cost of covering a large family vacation last summer that required me to used all of my current points and a few borrowed points. I was told by the insurance advisor that I would have pay a double premium - $158 instead of the advertised $79 to cover the points because the points came from 2 use years. I asked if I could just choose to insure some of the points and was told I could not. Like all insurance products it is advertised as if you can travel with no worries for a low premium - check up on your individual situation and costs - and beware of the "small print."

I bought the insurance for the first time for a trip next August. The trip uses banked/current/borrowed points and is for us, our adult children and my 87 yo mother. My mom is the reason I bought insurance. Even though she's ok now, anything could happen at anytime (I know that all too well), and suddenly (as in within a few days of the trip). Our UY is December, and the trip is only a few days past the banking window. Ins. gives me a LITTLE peace of mind, and covers all trips in 3 use years (paid the triple premium). If we had to cancel suddenly and SHE couldn't go, it would also cover her flight cost, ticket cost, etc. And if I couldn't then bank/reallocate the points I had to use for the extra studio I reserved because she was going, it provides some compensation for those points. It made me feel better to just buy the insurance.

My family and I are down at Wilderness Lodge for the week (Thanksgiving).

We arrived Saturday night about 3 and about 6 that night I fell and broke the top of my humerus. The ER bill came to $1,825 plus a sling and pain medication added another $25.

The insurance company said they would cover it all plus the taxi ride to/from Celebration ER.

It worked out for me having the insurance.

For those of us who fly there is the added benefit of insurance for plane fares. The change fees are about $150/ticket nowadays.

I have a question about this as well.

As I understand it if you are using points from different UY you have to buy two insurance policies to cover the points. What if I am more concerned about using the insurance to cover airfare reimbursement?

Can I just buy one $79 policy in case our family isn't able to travel? Will that give us back our airfare costs?

Oh, my gosh, that's awful! I hope you are recovering comfortably.

The first two days were terrible, just left the room for dinner. I've been to the parks for about half a day per day since then with my arm in a sling. I have a wonderful wife who has been taking very good care of me (she is a nurse, it comes in handy).

IMO the $79 insurance fee is very affordable compared to just one ER visit or missed airline connection.

We travel to Disney several times a year on our points. The cost is very reasonable if it is spread out over 3-4 trips.

The Travel Insurance currently promoted by DVC is $79/use year. Price is at the top of the following page (log on required).

Interesting that they price it by the use year, no matter how many points you own.

But if you had done this, would it have covered all trips for both use years?

So it does sound like it covers all trips in the use years you pay premium for.

As I understand it, they waive the pre-existing conditions exclusion if you buy it when you pay your annual dues. I think I'm going to do it in January. With my kids' special needs, it seems like a cancellation would probably be related to a pre-existing condition. But if I can get that waived, it seems like a good price for all the coverage I'd get.

I have purchased in the past travel insurance from the 'old' company. I am not sure how it works now but in the past you would be reimbursed $10 or 11 p/pt used. For the fee, if there is a chance whether traveling with a older parent or kids you can become I'll when you are outside of your cancellation period it is worth it.

I purchased insurance (had to pay $79 ( X3 ) = $237. Points used were Banked, Current & Borrowed (3 Use years) for my Jan 7, 2012 Western Caribbean cruise, Cat. 6 Cabin.

I just cancelled and submitted my claim for reimbursement. (My husband had a STROKE)

I could not get a 'straight' answer as to how/what we will be re-imbursed.

I used 356 pts. total for the cruise, no airfare or other involvement, plus I did pay $95 X2 = $190 in 'fees' to Disney for the reservation. (original fee plus 1 change).

I will update on my outcome.......

Sorry to here about your husband, hope he is recovering well. I don't think you will be refunded the fee to book, but you should be paid based on the points you used and loss. They then sent it to DVC to verify that ___ amount of points were loss.
