Travel Insurance Uncertainties

We've never gotten travel insurance before (nor spent this much money for a trip!) so I'm uncertain about what I'm buying.

Most of the TAs have quoted us the standard Disney CL insurance which comes out to $257 for the 3 of us for our 7 day cruise. We can decide whether or not to purchase this insurance up until our final payment is due.

AllSeasTravel has quoted us coverage for the 3 of us for only $128. The trick is we have to purchase within 10 days of first booking and the fee is not refundable if we decide to cancel the cruise for other than medical reasons (even before out final payment is due.)

I've tried to askin questions about the coverage and from what I can determine, the price and when you have to decide whether to purchase are the primary differences.

Am I missing something? Does anyone have any insights on this? Thanks. :earsboy:

We bought the insurance for the medical coverage. My understanding is that most insurance companies don't cover out-of-country costs. With the DCL ins., they will pay for a helicoptor to fly you where you need if it's an emergency and medical treatment. I don't normally get the ins., but the idea of being sick on the ship and having to worry about the cost of my treatment was terrible. While I hope I will never receive the benefits of it, it was worth it to us to pay for the peace of mind so we can totally enjoy the vacation, but I am also prone to strange illnesses so that factored into our decision as well.

Look into Travelguard. You can ask your travel agent about it, or book it directly online. If you purchase it within 15 days of your initial deposit then it also includes Change of Mind coverage, which will give you up to $250 if you decide to cancel your trip for any reason whatsoever. This might depend on what state you're in though, so check the website.

Use insuremytrip.com. I use them for my cruises and even purchase it directly through their website. Very easy to use.

Try Access America (www.accessamerica.com) They are the same insurance company that Disney uses and you can save a lot of money by ordering your insurance directly through them. Also, this is important if you don't book your air through Disney. Disney will only insure the cruise portion if you don't book your air through them. By booking directly, your air, transfers and cruise are covered. We had to use the insurance on a cruise last year and they were very easy to deal with.

My Dad and I went on a Wonder Cruise last month. We didn't buy the insurance. He nearly drowned on a snorkel excursion and had to be Lear Jetted to the states! That alone is expected to be about $15,000. The treatment on the ship (for about 4 hours) ran about $4000 and had to be paid before he was evacuated. The hospital and Dr. bills are piling in now---hospital alone sent a bill for $26,000 (5 days there in Ft. Lauderdale). Fortunately, he has good insurance, but I imagine it sure would have been easier if we had trip insurance. Without the trip insurance, we were also on our own to arrange transportation back to our homes. Fortunately, their medical staff is very good and my Dad seems to be fine now.

Sue what a horrible experience! I'm glad he is doing OK now and that his insurance is covering it. Many policies do not cover you if you leave the states!:scared1:
