Travel Insurance through DCL - Vacation Protection Plan Booklet

There is a possibility that this might have been asked before, but does anyone know if it's worth it to invest in the travel insurance. I've been on the fence for one reason only...the cost. Other than that, has anyone ever needed to use it and was it worth purchasing through DCL? Thank you in advance!

Generally it's better to purchase travel insurance through a 3rd party company and not directly with the cruise line (any cruise line). It can be much cheaper and cover more.

Yes, it's worth the peace of mind (at least for us). Particularly the medical/evacuation coverage.

Thank you ...that's good to know. Do you have any recommendations for 3rd party insurers? Perhaps maybe one that you have used before?

There are travel insurance comparison sites that many people use (us included). You enter the parameters of what you want covered and they will show you several different company's policies that fit your bill for comparison.

Squaremouth, Insure my trip, and Trip Insurance store are a few of the different sites for this.

Thank you soooo much...you are a lifesaver!!! I will definitely check them out.

I have both our trips insured through Disney but am thinking I may just drop that and go this route (travel insurance compare) and get it privately. But do you include flights in the "total cost" it asks for or just the cruise portion? I'm wondering because our trip in February we are definitely insuring because colorado can get some major snow and the airport closes so we would never be able to just "drive" there if the plane cant leave.

You can cover whatever you want to cover. DCL insurance only covers whatever you pay for through DCL. 3rd party insurance you can cover whatever parts (flights, cruise, hotels) you want. Most people only cover whatever would be non-refundable if they had to cancel.

There are all sorts of cancellation coverages - medical reasons, work reasons, weather related, flight problems, cancel for any reason (that's usually the more costly coverage).

We purchased separate travel insurance through Allainz. We booked our flight separate from DCL and extended our stay in Vancouver, so we wanted something that covered all of that.

We use USAA. If you want the insurance to cover pre-existing conditions and some other things, you need to get it right away after booking. Some within 10-30 days.

We were just on the WBPC cruise. We purchased insurance that covered our flights, hotel, rental car, luggage, the entire cruise, excursions (we booked private). It was approx. $140 for 3 people 19 days of travel. I wanted it for medical evacuation and reasons of that nature. Guess what I ended up using it for? The third day of the trip, I opened the desk/vanity drawer and the handle/pull hooked my DSLR camera strap and crash...to the floor it went. The fall cracked my LCD screen. We got home, put in the claim to Travel Guard and they mailed us a check for the camera repair. BAM! We got our monies worth on our insurance...for a camera repair. Who would have thought we would have needed/used it for that?

There was a family on our cruise who had an emergency medical evacuation...I do not know the details, but what I do know is that we pulled in to Guatemala waters and it took about an hour to get the patient and family off the ship and on to this tugboat. This family's vacation was likely ruined due to this situation. Now, add on the cost of the tugboat running for an hour, the medical bills on the ship that most insurances will not cover, the port fees to have a ship in Guatemala waters (we had to wait for clearance to leave from the port authority, so someone is paying some port bills!), then you have hospital bills in that country, medical transportation, and then 5 flights home...visas, etc. Would YOU want to pay for that? I know I would want to just worry about my sick family member and know that all medical and travel expenses are covered and my trip will be reimbursed to me in full so we can go again another time. All for the cost of what a few nice bottles of wine..?

Yes.

So, OP, if anyone traveling, or anyone at home who is very important in your life, has a pre-existing condition that could cause you to cancel or end travel early for, you want the pre-existing conditions to be covered. So you have to get that insurance. If no one in your life has any conditions (no diagnosed asthma, no heart conditions, no past strokes, no etc) that could flare up and cause you to cancel or change, you don't need that level of insurance.

Wow, that's neat that it covered your screen.

Is it cheap with USAA?? I never thought of buying travelers insurance through them, but it makes sense that they would have it.

Was that $140 per person or $140 total?

I've never gotten vacation insurance on any trip we have ever taken. I think the decision on whether or not it is right for you and your family is very unique to each situation. That being said, if peace of mind makes you rest easier than spending money that you likely won't get anything in return for, then you will probably be fine with a vacation insurance.

I do agree with others that if I did have the need to purchase it, I would not do so through DCL.

It's good to know some never purchase it. There really isn't anything that would stop me from going on this trip. I know that I have to make a final decision by the time I make my final payment. So this does help.

Some people self insure. That means that they usually take lots of cruises and figure if someday they have to cancel one, the amount they lost is about equal to what they didn't spend in premiums.

Since trip insurance is dependent on ages and the costs you are insuring, for some it's cheap and for others it's not as cheap.

If anyone in the traveling party (or elderly parents at home, that sort of situation) has anything already diagnosed that could cause cancellation/interruption, you do NOT have until final payment to purchase insurance that will cover that. Buy it within the insurance company's time period or that won't be covered.

So if we buy that insurance and my MIL has another stroke or heart attack, we would be covered for canceling. If we don't buy the insurance that covers pre-existing conditions, and that happens, we are not covered. If we don't buy that insurance but get normal insurance and some it brand new happens to her, it's covered. Since just about anything that could happen with her health would have to do with her already diagnosed conditions, we are likely out of luck if we miss buying that insurance level.

Good point, and very well said. Fortunately for me any circumstances like that currently are very unlikely.
