Travel Insurance question?

We are going to Disney for a week in Jan. and have never purchased travel insurance in the past however for this trip we will be leaving behind an elderly grandmother in a nursing home who has not been doing well for about two months. Also my father in law who is in poor health. (newly diagnosed terminal cancer)
So I am very nervous about this trip.
Ironically the trip was planned because the past year had been a difficult one for me due to some health issues that are now resolved and I was so happy to be feeling better and to have gotten through it all that I wanted to celebrate. I have planned this trip with only a few months notice which is the shortest of any trip I've ever done.
Anyway, we just aren't sure how travel insurance works with a situation like a family member back home who could pass away right before or even during the trip.
We are using Southwest points to fly and they are very easy to cancel with no penalty but that Disney package for the 4 of us is very expensive!
Does anyone has any experience with his situation?

If your flights aren’t an issue, I wouldn’t bother with insurance. I believe, others please correct me if I’m wrong, that as long as you cancel at least 2 days prior, you only lose the $200 deposit. The insurance costs almost that much. How long are you going? If it’s a week, and your loved one passed away during your trip, would you really need to head home? At that point, there’s not much you can do and funerals can easily be planned a week or longer later. I don’t say that to be callous - we did a similar cost benefit analysis for our trip and opted not to get it.

You need to check for policy's which cover situations like you describe - disruption or cancellation of a vacation due to a medical emergency. Some policies have clauses about pre existing conditions.

I have claimed for a cancelled vacation. We had booked to go on a family vacation and my father was hospitalised a few weeks before departure. We contacted the insurance company and submitted a note from the hospital with all the receipts for the lost deposits / non refundable bookings. As long as you have a genuine reason and can prove you have lost money due to cancellation, the travel insure will reimburse you.

Yes we are only gone a week and I was aware of the cancelling two days prior but I'm worried about that week we are gone it's my husbands father so I don't think he's going to want to miss the funeral. Also I can't imagine anyone would enjoy the remaining trip days anyway.
But you are correct that if it happened in the middle of the trip it would be 2-3 days before they would have arrangements made. But it's not his mother that would be doing the planning it would bed his wicked stepmother! LOL

And you have to make sure it covers situations *at home*, not just problems with the people traveling.

I was going to say “surely they wouldn’t have the funeral while he’s gone” but then I saw the comment about the evil stepmother. Ugh.

I wouldn’t go with Disney insurance. Go with a third party. Places like insure my trio have a variety to choose from. I got confused doing it online so I called to get guidance and they helped steer me to the insurance products that would meet our needs.

Travelinsurance.com is a good site to use to compare various policies offered by several companies. I have a Room-Only Package and so couldn't get insurance through Disney. Thankfully, I've not had to utilize any of the policies that I have purchased. :shamrock:
