Travel insurance purchase timeline?

For those of you that don't purchase your travel insurance within 14 days of making a deposit, when do you generally buy it? Is there a point of time where it is too late to purchase such? Are the prices higher the closer you get to your sail date?

I have purchased travel insurance within days of the cruise. I only buy the medical. My credit card offers insurance which is good enough. I would suggest a good travel credit card.

I typically purchase travel insurance around the final payment date, because before that date, there are no costs if I cancel. (I use a credit card for airfare which has insurance to cover a flight cancellation.) I buy travel insurance through my insurance company. The price appears to be based on the trip cost and location, and does not change over time.

Insurance can be purchased up until the departure date. However, if you have a personal issue between final payment and departure that results in cancelling the cruise, you will need to have insurance in order to get a refund.

My rule f thumb on trip insurance is..if the hurricane/tropical storm has a name already ~ it is too late!

But, another thing to consider is…if there is an existing medical condition that needs to be taken into consideration, then stick within the 10 or 14 day booking period of the company you are going with.

Also, if anyone in your party has Medicare, be sure to check with all your Medicare advantage plans to see if you need additional coverage for being outside of the country.

Most travel insurance needs to be bought within 14 days of the initial deposit to cover pre-existing conditions. However , there are many things travel insurance will cover beyond pre-existing conditions. Having travel insurance at any point is better than not having it (especially for cruising). I'm a big fan of Allianz annual policy.
