I want to get travel insurance. In particular- I want to be sure we have med-vac coverage in case anyone in our party needs to be evacuated by helicopter to a hospital in the States. I've been to some insurance sites looking, but I just don't know what I'm doing when I get there. They ask for Medical limits- and then want a dollar amount. I don't know what that means. The medical coverage we have is very good. It would cover any expenses we incurred if we were to be hospitalized. Knowing that, what should I be looking for? Can anyone help, or does anyone know of a good website that explains Travel Insurancew for Dummies???

Have you check with your health insurance company on your coverage? I called mine before our first cruise and found that they will cover medical emergencies outside the country, I would just need to submit invoices.

We still get travel insurance in case of travel delays, etc, but it's a relief to know if one of us needed to get air lifted our medical insurance will cover that.

Check out Access America's website. They are the company Disney uses to underwrite their insurance.

This chart shows Access America's different coverages.

Access America comparisons

It gives you the dollar amounts for the different types of coverage.

Check out www.insuremytrip.com

They have a way for you to compare policies - some will include this coverage, some will not, and a separate medical section as well. I have found it to be the most thorough site for insurance comparisons.

We did check with our Insuarance Company. They will cover medical expenses- but the will not cover any medi-vac charges if it were to be needed.

ljm- I did check that particular site- and while it is very thourough- that is what promtped my question! there's so much to choose from!

If you're doing a 2 week trip- 1 week to orlando and the next to the Caribbean can you count the expense fo the entire trip on that site? they ask for a destination- but only allow for 1.

That is one questions I do know. :) You tell them when you are traveling. We are covered on our upcoming trip from the time we leave home to the day we return...including the trip, travel to & from FL, and a few days at WDW. You just need to add the cost of everything into your total because that is what they base the cost of the insurance on.

OK- on that line of thought. The first week we go, we'll be staying at BCV's and WLV's. We own DVC. How would I get reimbursed for that? Would I take what the resort would charge someone normally and add that tp my trip total?
