Travel insurance for a placeholder

I was wondering when to buy insurance for a placeholder cruise. Should I buy it within the 10 days of paying the deposit? Will the insurance travel with any of my vacation dates changing?

AFAIK, in my experience, when we made changes to our trips, we were able to adjust dates with the already purchased insurance. To be sure, however, I'd check with the insurance company what their policy is on when to purchase for a yet-unnamed date trip.

When I went to purchase our trip insurance, they wanted to know the date of the first payment… which would have been when we paid for the placeholder cruise. If we had wanted to have the pre-existing conditions waiver, for the insurance we were looking at, we would have had to buy the insurance within 21 days of the placeholder payment.
