refresh my memory because it's been a while. I am buying travel insurance through Insure My Trip. I buy it on everything non-refundable, right? So not just the cruise, but in my case my airfare/ I don't think I need it on the hotels (pre and post cruise) because they can be cancelled up to a few days in advance. Thanks.

Correct. You could purchase insurance for the refundable parts, but they would deny a claim for those, since you don't lose any money on them

You can exclude the taxes/fees part of your cruise also because even if you're a last minute no-show those would be refunded by the cruise line! This can make a difference in insurance cost when you're right at the edge of a different price range. Along this line of thinking, does anyone know if the cruise transfers through Disney are refundable if cancelled at the last minute? I'm wondering if I need to include those or not.

Has anyone had a good/bad experience with a specific company?
I feel like it is such a roll of the dice.....

I used AIG last year and had to cancel my Disney Cruise 9 days before they cruise. They refunded 100% of my non-refundable fees. I had to supply the necessary paperwork and sign a release for my doctor to furnish any necessary info. It took a few weeks, but it was paid.

I've been happy with Travel Insured. They paid my claim for a cancelled ski trip when my daughter broke her collarbone 5 weeks prior to the trip. (She's healed now)

why would taxes not have to be paid? If Disney keeps the cost of my cruise, why wouldn't it have to pay taxes on that income? I could see refunding something like a port fee, because they pay per person, but I'm not following why taxes would be refunded. I am paying 984.76 in taxes, fees and port expenses. Not knowing what portion is taxes and what portion is fees, I think I'd just insure it all?

"Taxes" and "port fees" are often rolled together. The taxes are the taxes the port charges, not sales tax.

If you cancel you cruise, say, after the final penalty date (lose all monies paid), port fees/taxes are not charged. The ship pays those fees when the actually port. If your body is not onboard, the port doesn't charge for you.

We have never used insurance or cruised before. If one person is hurt, sick, etc like above does the insurance company agree that the rest of the family also can't go on the cruise or do they only refund for the person that actually has the dr's note?

It depends. Some coverages will only cover the person cancelling. Others have coverages that will cover anyone needing to cancel due to family illness/death; work related reasons; whatever. You need to read the actual coverage offerings to see what each policy you may be considering covers.

Insurance isn't a one size fits all thing. You can tailor your policy to cover whatever, whoever, costs work for you.

I've had good luck with TravelGuard. I've had their insurance on all the cruises in my signature and have made claims on 2. One for a lost camera and onboard Dr. visit for sinus infection, and another one for a waterproof camera that quit working one day while at port. Their paperwork requirements were reasonable.

We used Alianz several times. Made a claim once, not on a cruise, but a different vacation. They required some paperwork documentation afterwards, but then they paid our claim no problem. They are very clear on the phone what your various options are as far as what events are covered, etc.
