I'm a home based agent and I can tell you I have made plenty of changes for clients and never have had any trouble whatsoever. Whoever told you that changes can't be made either doesn't know or just don't want to be bothered. Just recently had to change a clients reservation to add someone to their reservation after their final payoff due date. Called Disney and had no trouble at all adding the additional guest to the reservation.

Thanks all! I will look into another agent, our agent is pushing for a package with an airline and discounting our other requests saying they aren't cost efficient. The tips from here are invaluable !

We had a travel agent who pushed us into booking through an airline as a package once and it was the only time we have ever had our reservation screwed up. That package, once booked, could not be changed or altered in any way.

I'm also a TA that specializes in Disney - it's completely normal to change reservations either for new discounts, upgrading dining, adding insurance, or anything else. We always book directly through the TA side of Disney directly, but I have heard that there are suppliers who don't allow changes on existing bookings. Perhaps your TA booked through one of those suppliers and not Disney?

There was a public discount released today that we were eligible for, I had an email before 10:00am that she had applied it to our reservation, saved us $$ and that we qualified for a free day at the parks! And I didn't have to ask!!

She is Disney Certified and travels to WDW frequently as well so has a lot of first hand knowledge. Also keep in mind, that a REALLY good TA will even help you or create for you a custom touring plan for your family.
