Is there any transportation to Universal Studios from Disneyland that would give more flexibility than the buses? I would think that taxis are cost prohibitive, but has anyone used taxis? If so, how much were they? Thanks!

I'm looking at this too, uberx estimates 38 - 52 dollars each way, that seems reasonable enough. Only concern is you get screwed on surge pricing when you try.

Uber will be your cheapest and most schedule flexible.

You can get a $100 flat rate taxi voucher from any of the resort hotels DL to Universal...do not know if they have that on the way back.

Price a rental car as well...can be relatively cheap for a day depending on your trip timing and give you ultimate flexibility and control.

You can also take the Metrolink train from Anaheim station (near the Baseball Stadium) to Union Station, then take the red line subway from there to Universal City station.
Keep in mind that you might find some colorful people as you travel on the subway.
Overall the experience is a bit more adventurous and you avoid the traffic.

I hear the subway method takes a very long time, how long do you estimate?

The trip on the MetroRedline Subway takes 25 min from LA Union Station to Universal.

The trip from Anaheim to Universal using Metrolink train and MetroRedline Subway will take around 90mins from the time you get on the train to the time you arrive at Universal. If you want more flexibility I highly suggest that you catch the train at Fullerton Amtrak/Metrolink station. More trains going to LA Union Station stop at that station.

The longest trip will be when you want to return to Anaheim. The last Metrolink train leaves LA Union Station at 6:30pm, so if you want to stay late, you will have to take Amtrak or LA Metro bus 460 from Downtown LA to Disneyland. The 460 bus ride can take 2 hours from the time you get on to the time you arrive at Disneyland.

I've just decided to rent a car. $40 to pick up Saturday and return it Monday to head to Universal all day on Sunday. It'll cost me two nights of parking fees at our motel too but save us tons of time

In my opinion, this is the best option, and gives you a chance to do other things if you'd like.

Just remember that with little to no traffic it will take you an hour to get from Disneyland to Universal.
Normally I would leave 2 hours earlier than the time I want to arrive to be on the safe side.
If you visit on weekend you will have less traffic, but a busier Universal park.

Make sure you use GPS as there are 3 different ways you can get to Universal.
I tend to like taking the 5fwy to 91fwy, then 605n to 210e, to 134. It can be a longer ride, but there is carpool.

Thanks for the tip! We are also renting a car for our end of August trip and will be hitting up Universal on our first full day.
