We are going to WDW this summer and am thinking about taking a cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale. Has anyone done this before? I'm wondering what the most economical way to get there would be?

Thanks!

A one-way rental car should be most economical. It's about a 3-1/2 hour drive. The Fort Lauderdale International Airport Rental Car Center (shared by several rental car companies) has free shuttle service to Post Everglades.

If you don't want to drive, you can fly from Orlando International to Fort Lauderdale International. Delta and Spirit often have nonstop flights for around $64. The flights have a scheduled time of just one hour. However, by the time you figure the time on the ground on both ends (getting to Orlando Airport and waiting for bags at Fort Lauderdale), it will probably take longer than driving.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking it would probably be more cost effective to just rent a car for one day, but I was wondering how to actually get to the port. If they have a shuttle, that's great! I was going to rent a car for the last ten days of our trip, but five of those the car would be sitting in the parking lot at the port and that would cost another $60 or so. Car rental prices right now for August are "Yikes!":scared1:

We've never gone on a cruise before, so I don't know the protocol. What time do you board and such, so I know how much time I need to allow.

Thanks again!

Yes, car rental is the most economical way to get to Ft. Lauderdale via the Florida Turnpike (the most expeditious way).

As mentioned before, it is about a 3 1/2 hour drive through relatively boring landscapes but you'll easily find the well marked port (just past the airport entrance). You'll have to enter the port through a security gate that insures only passengers and delivery people can enter the "secure" area.

The ships all arrive fairly early in the morning but they must first disembark all the previous passengers and tidy up the ship for the oncoming passengers. Typically, the ships have completed their disembarkation by 10:00 am and if you happen to be there at that time, you may board and enjoy a leisurely time getting to know the ship as it won't depart until late afternoon. The most heavy boarding time is usually between 12:00 - 2:00 pm but sometimes there are air traffic delays (weather related) causing many inbound flights to be delayed and if there is a sufficient number of passengers on these late flights, I've seen the cruise line delay departure into the late hours of the evening. They don't want a huge glut of disgruntled passengers and loss of income by leaving 500-1000 people behind but then again, they won't wait for 10 people if they have a nearly full ship at departure time!

If you leave Orlando at 7 - 8:00 am, you'll be there in plenty of time and then can enjoy the buffet lunch that will be likely offered somewhere on the ship! Enjoy and have the time of your life, most people who cruise enjoy it so much they often forsake a land vacation for yet another cruise.

We actually did it the other way around. We cruised on Royal Caribbean out of Ft. Lauderdale first. We flew into Ft. Lauderdale airport and prepaid for RC's transportation to the port, (which is about 10 minutes from the airport). After the cruise, we took the RC bus back to the airport and picked up our rental car there from Alamo and drove to WDW, like the above poster said, in about 3 1/2 hours. We then returned the car to the Swan/Dolphin car rental area. After 5 days in WDW, we then flew home out of the Orlando airport.

Rental car will definately be the cheapest way to go.

I would highly recommend taking the Turnpike from WDW to Fort Lauderdale. Mapquest will usually route the last part of this trip on I-95, but 95 from Miami to Palm Beach is a real bear. Spend the extra money in tolls (it'll run about $17-18, including the Oceola Parkway toll) and make it a nice easy drive.

Hope that helps!

Here's information on the rental car companies that are "under one roof" in the Rental Car Center at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport: http://www.broward.org/airport/parking_transportation_rentals.htm

We've used Thrifty to Port Everglades twice...their location was really close to the ships and the shuttle to take you to your cruise line was very prompt.
