Transportation to DD?

I am staying at the Residence Inn on Clementine and want to go out to Downtown Disney the night before the park. Since the park closes at 8, the shuttles stop at 8:30pm so how do I get back? How far is it? Do people take taxis? We could drive, but I hate to pay for parking. Possible we might drive there around 4pm or so if there is. Is there an area of free parking if you have dinner at DD? Validation?

Any ideas?

Parking at Downtown Disney is free for the first three hours. If you go to a movie or eat at a restaurant, you can have your parking ticket validated for an additional two hours, for a total of five hours.

Some people do take taxis, but most of us just drive there.
