I was wondering if this plan is possible in 1 day in January.

1. Rope drop at Epcot and stay until around 1:00
2. Go to Animal Kingdom til 7:00 PM
3. Go back to Epcot for Illuminations
4. After illuminations, go to Magic Kingdom for Extra Magic hours from 10:00-12:00

I am staying at the all-star sports hotel. Would waiting for buses take too long? or would calling an uber just for a few miles be most beneficial to minimize travel time (and to maximize time at the parks).

Thanks!

This is doable with Disney transportation, but if your goal is to minimize travel time and maximize park time then I would uber or taxi for numbers 2 and 3. The way it would go down with Disney transportation would be to bus from All Sports for RD at Epcot. Bus to AK from Epcot, from main gate or through IG to BC or BW. Bus from AK to Epcot doing the reverse of previous sentence. Monorail from Epcot to TTC and transfer to MK or [and again], exit through IG and bus from BC to BW to MK.

I would probably--Bus to Epcot
Taxi from either the front of Epcot or one of the Boardwalk area resorts to the Animal Kingdom
Taxi to Epcot
Taxi to Magic Kingdom
Bus back to Sports

I've done a three-park day kind of similar to this except for the first Epcot portion. I took a cab from AK to Epcot. The journey from Epcot after Illuminations to MK will take longer than you think no matter what you do. Either a taxi or monorail will leave you at the TTC and you'll still need to make it over to MK via another monorail line or ferry. That journey just always takes longer than you think it will.

I'd position yourself towards the entrance World Showcase to watch Illuminations so you can make a quick exit and try to beat the crowds.

I agree with the previous posters to use taxi or uber to Animal Kingdom, back to Epcot and to the Magic Kingdom. Taxis are waiting near the bus stops in the parking lot of the parks. At the resorts they are at the driveway entrance to the resort or if not in sight you can ask valet or bell services to call for one. It only takes a couple minutes because they are usually parked nearby.

If you take a taxi/uber from Epcot to the Magic Kingdom, ask to be taken to the Contemporary Resort and let the driver know you are actually headed for the MK. Sometimes they will drop you off just inside the CR parking lot. Whether there or at the CR, it is just a 5-10 minutes walk to the MK. If you ask to be taken to the MK, the driver will drop you off at the Ticket & Transportation Center and you will have to take the monorail or ferry to the MK which will take longer than the short walk from the Contemporary.
