Hello Everyone,

My girlfriend and I are planning our first Disney Trip together for this upcoming October. And so far planning is going smooth.
The only issue that we are running into is for transportation. We are highly considering rental car, but run into issues because we are 21. And other issues.

Could anyone give any advice on rental cars or if you know any advice for 21 year olds renting. Or does anyone know of any resorts or places that do shuttle?
Because we are also planning on going to Universal, Seaworld, and Aquatica.

Thank You!!! :wizard:

If you are talking about WDW resorts, you can talk to the front desk once you check in about the Mears' buses that run to US.

Or, there are always cabs that you can get to take you to each location. They are typically always outside of the resorts, but if you want to make sure that there is one definitely there to pick you up, go to concierge and they will give you the info you need to get one scheduled. I stayed at Animal Kingdom Villas last trip, and wanted to take a cab to Fort Wilderness for something I had planned with some friends.

I got the cab company info from concierge and called to have one set up just to be sure that I'd get there on time; but, when I walked outside, there were several other cabs there, too. They're typically always very efficient.

The cab fare might not be any more than the Mears' fare; which, for that reason, I would actually rec the cabs. That way, you aren't on the strict schedules that Mears' runs - especially at Universal. They pick you back up at a specific time, so you wouldn't have any extra time to check out City Walk after the parks close.

Hope that helps; good luck planning and have a wonderful trip!!

Check out the transportation boards; they have a sticky at the top about alternate transportation to the places you mentioned.

the only time that you would need a rental is if you are going to places off site like universal studios or if you do not want to take disney transportation to and from the theme parks. i have no problems with disney transportation

If you want to "think outside the box" :idea:, there is an odd way that you can rent your own transportation. I recently heard that some young twenty-somethings were able to rent a U-Haul truck while at a horse show in Tampa. Evidently, you only need to be 21 to rent a U-Haul truck. You'd probably have to get a cab to the rental place, but you would have transportation for your vacation. Just need to find a bigger parking place further out in the lots. Not sure how much the cost would be though.

Good luck!

My DD had this issue when she visited DL. She was able to get a car from Enterprise-Rent-A-Car. The daily rate was higher, but she needed a car to get around southern California. She was pleased with the service. Not sure if all the Enterprise locations have the same requirements.

Most of the major rental agencies will rent to someone who is 21....with surcharges and conditions. 18 if you are military.

Which brings the question.... are either you or your GF in the Military? It may make things a bit easier.

Beyond that, if you check the FAQs for most of the rental agencies, you can find information regarding their policies for "underage rentals". for instance, this is the info I was able to grab from Avis' website:

Avis rents to customers between the ages of 21-24 with a valid credit card and driver's license. At time of rental, we will automatically apply an additional $27-per-day underage surcharge in the US and $35 per day in Canada for these drivers. (See exceptions)

EXCEPTIONS:

In Washington DC., the minimum age to rent is 25. Except at Washington Dulles Airport (IAD), which now rents to customers between the ages of 21-24 with a valid credit card and driver's license.

In New York State the minimum age to rent is 18 with a $52 per day surcharge for renters age 18-20 and a $35-per-day underage surcharge for renters age 21-24.

Michigan will continue to have a minimum age of 18 with a $41-per-day surcharge for customers between the ages of 18-20 and $28-per-day surcharge for customers between the ages of 21-24.

In Quebec, the minimum age to rent car groups A, B, C, D & E is 21 with an under age fee of $20 per day for renters age 21-24. For all other car groups, the minimum age is 25.

In Saskatchewan, the minimum age is 18. No under age fee applies.

Renters between the ages of 21-24 may not rent vehicles in the following car classes:

* Luxury
* Specialty
* Minivans
* Passenger Vans
* Full-Size SUVs
* Premium SUVs

I'd also recommend asking in the Transportation forum since there are a lot of people much more knowledgeable about all things transportation related.

You can rent a car if you are 21, but you will pay a 30.00 per day underage driver fee, which is aprox 30.00 per day.

Universal studios has special tickets you can purchase online, which include shuttle from Disney hotels.

If you are staying off Disney, I would recommend the Doubletree Resort Hotel on International drive. They offer transportation to all the parks, they are right next to seaworld and aquatica and they are right on the I-drive trolley route.

The I-drive trolley is a bus service you can get that goes all up and down I-drive. I suggest you look into it.
