We are heading to Southern California in November (I like to plan way in advance) and initially we will be staying in San Diego for several days and then heading up to Anaheim to do the Disney/Universal thing. We don't plan on renting a car if we can help it, is there public or private transportation that isn't outrageous? If it's that expensive, we may rent it for part of our trip, and drive it up to Disney and back. We did the train the opposite direction years ago, from Anaheim to San Diego, and enjoyed that, so I guess that's an option if they still have the service.

Any suggestions are welcome!

We are doing the same itinerary as you, only reverse. We are planning on taking the Amtrak from Aneheim, not far from DLR is my understanding, to San Diego. It is about a 2 hour train ride and it sounds like it rides along the Pacific Coast.

We took Amtrak from San Diego to Anaheim last October. Great trip! I would however suggest that you book Business Class seats. It's only a little bit more and it is the only way to ensure that you have a seat. If you book a regular ticket and the train is full, you may be standing for your 2 hour trip.
When we went, we would have been standing if I had not booked business class. It was well worth the extra expense...big comfy seats, in-seat tv's, complimentary snacks & beverages.
