We are going to Disney with, among others, my FIL who will need a scooter. We will have my minivan, so plan on driving to the parks. However, everyone says that you should always take the bus to MK because if you drive, you have to take a bus/monorail from the parking lot anyway.

So my question is - Since we will have the scooter, would it be easier to still drive to MK, or should we take the bus to that one park?

TIA

Well, your choices are these -

Drive to the Transportation and Ticket Center, park, get your father-in-law out of your vehicle and into the scooter. Take the tram (or walk/scoot) to the Center and then choose either the ferry boat or the monorail to the Magic Kingdom. With either choice, your father-in-law can stay in the scooter (but beware, there is either a long ramp for the monorail or an elevator ride). Then, disembark from whatever you chose and go through the entrance to Magic Kingdom.

Or - take the bus where your father-in-law drives his scooter into the vehicle and remains there (or he can transfer to a seat if he can) and once at the Magic Kingdom, he drives the scooter off the bus and goes through the entrance to Magic Kingdom.

Just remember with the bus, he will be the first one on but the last one off. You and your family members (within reasonable numbers) will be allowed to board with him but I would suggest at least one person remain behind when he is debussing (if that's a word).

I'm sorry but this answer has multiple errors in it.

1. You cannot get an ECV (scooter) on the Parking Lot Trams. Also, the trams do not stop at the disabled parking area.

2. There is no elevator at the TTC or MK for an ECV (or anything else)

3. For safety reasons a person is not allowed to sit on their ECV on a bus; they must transfer to a regular seat.

I would suggest you go over to the disABILITIES Forum for more (and more accurate) information.

if you are going to drive to ticket and transp, you would have to park in handicap lot, so we have gotten temp handi hanger tag for our car to make it easier.

Honestly, I vastly prefer WDW transport when dealing with scooters. No breaking them down, lifting them in and out, etc. just drive on and park.

3. For safety reasons a person is not allowed to sit on their ECV on a bus; they must transfer to a regular seat.

Not doubting in any way, but has this changed semi-recently. Did not ride buses on my last trip, but in 2011 saw people riding ECVs on buses more than once.

It is technically possible, and becomes necessary for people who can't transfer to a seat. I think they just prefer you to transfer if you can because there's less risk of anybody falling that way.

Yes.
They won't force a person to get off, but there are signs telling people they should. The scooter is less likely to tip if no one is sitting on it, so it is safer for the person using it and others on the bus if the scooter is not occupied.
There have been DIS posters who were sitting on one on the bus that tipped over, so it is a good possibility.

The signs have been on the buses for many years, so it is not a new policy.
