Transplant question

I have a tremendous project that I hope to get underway soon

We have an ugly hedge in my back yard that is not only an eyesore (I don't like hedges), but it attracts all sorts of weeds and spiders and it's impossible for my next door neighbor to paint his garage because it's blocking it.

DH is going to take a chainsaw to it and dig it up. Quite the daunting task, I'm sure. We're going to turn it into a flower bed and move an azalea, lilac, and rosebush over there because they are currently being choked by ferns where they are and I want to go nuts with round up on the ferns.

When is a good time of year to be transplanting these plants? Some of them have been where they are for decades and I don't want to traumatize them any more than I have to.

Not sure about the lilac, but the rosebush and the azalea, should be ok to be transplanted now. Try to do it during the afternoon when the weather is cooler so that the plants don't get shocked by the heat.

If I'm going to transplant something that has been around for awhile, I often break the roots first. I do this at a distance of about 2 feet from the trunk and then let the plant get used to having fewer roots for about a week or so. Then, I transplant the plant.
