Transplant girl and hubby visit WDW Christmastime AND we go cruisin in the BAHAMAS

Cruise Day 3--Castaway Cay…or not, and why is it so windy?

7:30, <knock knock> room service. Hmmm, I could get used to this....

Time for a wonderfully convenient breakfast of croissants, fresh fruit, OJ and some of the delicious, reconstituted “Disney Special” coffee syrup…BLECCHHHH! (HUBBY COMMENTS: " It is so disappointing that a company as great as Disney can’t seem to make a decent cup of coffee at any of their parks, resorts, or cruise ships! I’m sure Nestle must pay Mickey a ton of cash to serve the swill that they try and pass off as coffee. Midway through the cruise and I am CRAVING a cup of fresh brewed coffee. (Where is Tim Horton’s when you need them?) Sure, I could walk up to Deck 9 and buy a cup of coffee from the Cove Café, but that sort of defeats the purpose of room service, don’t you think? I mean, come on…I’m in my ripped boxers and my teeth aren’t brushed yet. Get on the ball, Disney…buy some coffee beans!" End of HUBBY''S RANT

After breakfast, hubby went up to the top deck to watch the ship dock at Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island paradise. The weather was a bit cool and cloudy with some pretty strong wind gusts but we were hopeful that the cloud cover would burn off.

Alas, it was not to be. Unfortunately, the wind was simply too strong and coming from an odd angle that made docking the ship impossible. The captain made an announcement that he was changing the itinerary and that today would be our “at sea” day and that we would attempt to dock at Castaway Cay tomorrow. They had done research, and determined that the winds would be much calmer tomorrow and also originating from the South, which made docking at Castaway Cay much easier. This was music to our ears. Being beach people, we’d both been waiting for Castaway Cay since we began planning our trip, and we were excited to hear that we would have another chance to visit tomorrow.

We learned that this is a GREAT BENEFIT to the 4 night cruise over the 3 night cruise. Had we only taken a 3 night cruise, there would be no flexibility in the schedule, so we would have missed our planned visit to Castaway Cay. We’d never thought of this beforehand, but we were very pleased that the folks at Disney did! Now, let’s just keep our fingers crossed and hope the we get sprinkled with some pixie dust and that the weather improves tomorrow. pixiedust:

By now it’s around 10:30am and we’re contemplating what to do today. This is where hubby surprises me and suggests that I make an appointment to the spa! YIPPEE. :cool1: I quickly make an appointment for 11:30, but do feel a bit sad because I don’t want to miss lunch with him. He assures me we can eat a late lunch, and that he’ll find a quiet spot of the ship to sit and do some studying for a test he needs to take for work next month. What a champ!

Ahh...the SPA...who doesn't like to get pampered at the SPA?? I ended up getting a very relaxing massage and facial. I felt like a princess ! It was a bit pricey, but well worth it. 2hrs later I returned to the cabin where I met hubby to go get some lunch...

We ended up eating a late lunch at the Beach Blanket Buffet. It was good, but we’re not real big fans of buffets. After lunch, since it was a bit windy, we opted once again to take an afternoon nap (I know, this is becoming a habit!)

A few hours later, we got ready for dinner and then went to the evening show. Tonight’s show was a comedian/juggler who was very, very funny and talented. We laughed a LOT, and it was a nice change of pace from the previous Disney shows/musicals.

Tonight is “Pirate Night” and dinner was scheduled to be at Parrot Cay. We loved Parrot Cay. It was Caribbean-themed, casual and very brightly colored. The food was great, as usual.

My appetizer: Black Beard's Jumbo Crab Cakes - with a fruit salsa and honey-lime tropical coleslaw

Hubby's appetizer : The Pirates Golden Pasta Envelopes - filled with cheese covered in a tomato and green chile sauce.

I had the Ceaser salad..no suprise!! Hubby had Caribbean-style Spicy Vegetable Gumbo Soup.

My Entree: Treasure-of-the-Seas Grilled Shrimp and Seared Scallops - served on strings of pasta and fresh creamy tomato sauce

Hubby Entree: Captain Hook's Macadamia Dusted Mahi Mahi - with crushed onion potatoes, sweet carrots, roasted broccoli on mild red curry sauce

Desserts...

ME: The Calypso Ice Cream Sundae- containing rum and raisin ice cream, caribbean cake and a rum caramel sauce

Hubby: Shiver-Me-Timbers - Key LIme Pie on a macadamia barnacle bottom

Everything was FABULOUS!!!

After dinner, we headed to the top deck for the Pirate Party. It was a lot of fun, although it was geared towards the kids. The best part of it was the fireworks show! Disney is the only cruise ship that is allowed to shoot fireworks off the ship. It was great to watch them explode over the ocean. Many thanks to our great dining server, who told us exactly where to stand to get the best view of the fireworks…he was absolutely right!

We were stuffed from dinner still, so we didn’t stick around for any of the goodies. Plus, we wanted to get to bed early so we could be ready for Castaway Cay in the morning!

Next…Keeping our fingers crossed for Castaway Cay and “Honey, why does that fish have such a long tail”???

UP NEXT ......CASTAWAY CAY!!!! BUT....BUT....BUT....Do you see what I see in the water honey???

Cruise Day 4-Can we please go to Castaway Cay?
Look out guys, this is a long one!

Hubby woke up early and went out to explore the top decks to see what the weather was like and hopefully see the ship sailing gracefully towards Castaway Cay. SUCCESS! The sky was blue, the clouds were few and far between and the weather was pleasantly warm. He watched us ease into the harbor and pull up to the dock.

No worries Mun…Castaway Cay soon come!

Hubby returned with a plate of fresh fruit and some chocolate croissants. We quickly ate and threw on our swimsuits and headed for our own tropical paradise!

Everybody sing with us... How’d you like to spend Christmas…on Castaway Cay…oops, I mean Christmas Island.....

Castaway Cay was almost too beautiful to describe. The water around the island was clear and shimmered in the sunlight. The sand was soft and white and the palm trees were tall and full. Disney did it right!!! We’ve been to several tropical destinations in the Caribbean over the years, and Castaway Cay was the best of them all! It’s truly a tropical paradise, but it also is full of Disney touches; it’s the best of both worlds.

The island is bigger than we imagined, and you will do a lot of walking throughout the day. There are trams to take you from the dock to the various beaches, but you’ll still end up walking a lot…so be prepared!

The island has a series of beaches that you can choose to visit. The closest to the ship is the snorkel beach, where you can rent snorkeling equipment. Next is the family beach, complete with a water “jungle jim” for kids to play on. I think there is a beach reserved for teenagers after that, but we never saw it, so can’t comment on that area. Continue on further into the island, through a winding path you walk for about 5 more minutes and come to a deserted airstrip. You walk down this airstrip (about 600 yards or so) and you end up on the other side of the island. You step off the runway and through a clearing and immediately your jaw simply drops. WELCOME TO SERENITY BAY! If you are an adult, this area alone is worth the price of the cruise. Serenity Bay is a beach isolated on the other side of Castaway Cay and is reserved for guests 18 and over.

As you enter Serenity Bay, there is a BBQ Shack and picnic area and a large open air bar and restrooms. The beach is huge…easily over a mile long with rows of beach umbrellas, chaise lounges and beach chairs. This part of the island is relatively “natural”, meaning that I don’t think Disney did much work to the beach and swimming area. The water does have some rocks and grass below the surface, and the water is VERY SHALLOW. You can wade out 400 yards or so and still be only in 4 feet of water. Also, this is “OPEN WATER”. There is no manmade barrier or reef, or any type of submerged net. YOU ARE IN THE OCEAN. More on this later…

We quickly left the ship to enjoy our day in paradise! It took us about 30 minutes to walk to Serenity Bay. We spent about 30 minutes playing in the water before we needed to head back to the dock area for our 11:00 parasailing appointment!!

We took the tram back, and made it back in about 10 minutes. We all climbed into our 18 foot speedboat and we were off. It was amazing sailing out to sea alongside the Wonder. You look up and all you see is ship…it’s quite a site! We were also amazed at how big the waves were when you are out in a little boat like that. Unfortunately, our parasailing adventure was short-lived. We’d merely gotten to the “take off” point when the companion boat came up to us and told us that Disney has cancelled parasailing for the time being…as the winds were simply too strong for it to be done safely, in their opinion. We were all disappointed, but Disney must ensure “Safety First” (the winds were clocked at 26 knots from the ship’s bridge).

When we returned to the dock, we checked to see if there were any later openings, but they weren’t taking any more appointments (We think Disney cancelled it for the entire day, BUT, the operator didn’t explicitly say that…once again “Safety First”…)

We headed over to the snorkeling lagoon and rented some equipment (Hubby: I realize I’m a cheapskate, but $25 to RENT fins and a mask? Come on, Disney…) This was our first attempt at snorkeling and it was INCREDIBLE. It was amazing to be able to “float” along the water, and it was cool to see how easily you could move with the flippers. The whole concept of “breathing” underwater was really neat.

After about 30 minutes, we opted to walk back to Serenity Bay and get some lunch and enjoy some “peace and quiet” of the adult beach. By this time, it was getting hot and the sun was blazing. We had some lunch around 1:00 at the beach grill at Serenity Bay and loved it. Hot Dogs, hamburgers, chicken, steak, ribs, salads, sodas and deserts. It was a great beach picnic.

After lunch, we walked down to the end of the Bay, and pulled some chaise lounges down to the water to relax and swim for the rest of the afternoon. (Hubby: Funny story: I decide to walk along the beach a bit and T decides she wants to do some more snorkeling. Remember, we’re no longer in the nice, safe, secure snorkeling lagoon; we’re in “open water”. I return from my walk and I look out into the distance, and all I see is this speck on the horizon. That can’t be her, can it? Sure enough, it’s T, further out that I have EVER seen her in the ocean. Eventually, she wanders back to shore, and she’s got this “strange look” on her face. When she was way out there, a GIANT sting ray swam right underneath her! Needless to say, we stayed closer to shore for the rest of the afternoon.)

The ship was set to leave at 5:00, but people started leaving the beach about 3:00. That’s fine with us, we love privacy. About 4:00, hubby decides it’s time to start heading back. He lifts his head off the chaise lounge and says, “Ummmm, honey, what’s that thing in the water?” Sure enough, not four feet from shore, burrowing into the sand was another massive sting ray. UNBELIEVABLE! It was directly in front of our lounges. It stayed for a few minutes until it slowly drifted off down the beach. It was an amazing sight to see. How does Disney do that? LOL.

We slowly walked back to the ship, and as we passed the family beach areas, we noticed everything was closed. They must shut down between 3:00 and 4:00. We were a bit bummed because we wanted to perhaps grab a souvenir or mail a postcard from the post office. Oh well, that will be a “to do” for the next trip and we both know there will DEFINITELY be a next trip. In fact, we've already decided that our next cruise will be a "double dip" where you spend two days at Castaway Cay rather than one (a day on the front end of the cruise and a day on the back end). What's better than paradise? Paradise Squared!

We reluctantly boarded the ship around 4:45, and cleaned up to get ready for our last evening on the ship…BOO HOO!

Next…Our last evening and debarkation

STAY TUNED....IT'S OUR LAST NIGHT ON THE SHIP!!

WOW I loved the pictures of Castaway Cay. We considered a Disney Cruise too but I think I'd rather spend my time at WDW..but if we had more money I think we would try the cruise too!!!

The pictures of the road back..is that an old runway or something? That's what it looks like to me.

Oh..we moved our trip up to April 3rd-12th...taking advantage of the 4/3 deal so we simply could not pass that up!!!

Yes, it is an air strip that was built and used by the people who owned the island before Disney bought it. Congrats on getting the good deal for your trip!! :thumbsup2

We are planning another trip May 30-June 6th 2009. We are taking hubby's 3 kids, my step-children!! They are sooo excited!! It was their BIG suprise Christmas gift this year!!! We are staying at the new Kidani Village at the AKL.....CAN'T WAIT!!!!:cool1:

I hope that you all have fun...and thanks for that..It looked like an air strip but wasn't so sure :)

Cruise Day 4—Continued and Our Final Morning, Leaving the Wonder
Back from Castaway Cay and it’s time to get ready for our last wonderful evening on the ship. We spent some time on our verandah, watching as we mover farther and farther from the island. Goodbye Black Pearl…goodbye yummy BBQ shack, goodbye beautiful water and glorious beaches…even goodbye to you, Mr. Sting Ray. As we continued to sail from the island, we made a promise to each other that we would DEFINITELY return on another cruise as quickly as possible. :hourglass

We took showers and got dressed to get ready for the evening’s entertainment. Tonight was the “BIG SHOW”…Disney Dreams. Without a doubt, this is the best show Disney does aboard the Wonder. According to the Cruise Director, Disney Dreams has been voted as the “Number 1” show each year for 8 years in a row by some type of “cruise line travel association”. After we saw the show, we both agree. The show was a “version” of Peter Pan, with a great, inspirational story line; a show about hope and perseverance. We both loved it. Now, don’t get us wrong, ALL of the entertainment was top notch. There was just something “better” about Disney Dreams.

After the show, we returned to our room to begin packing and to fill out the tip envelopes. Dinner our last evening was at Triton’s. This restaurant seems to be the “fanciest” on the ship, although the menu seems similar to the other restaurants.

Here is what we had for dinner....

My Appetizer: Shrimp Medley - with cocktail sauce

Hubby's Appetizer: Escargot - baked in herb and garlic butter

Note: Hubby and I have never had Escargot before and we both agreed to try new things while on the cruise....so we gave it a shot....what did we think?? BLECK! :crazy2: They were so slimey!!

My Dinner: I had a Filet with a side of baby carrots, Rutabega, and smashed sweet peas. Everything was great..except the Rutabega...no taste at all.

Hubby's Dinner: Slowly Braised Shank of Lamb in Natural Juices - with pommes boulangeres, portobello mushrooms, braised vegetables and a red wine sauce He said it was good!!

My Dessert: Crepes Suzette, too sweet for me.....and that's saying A LOT!!

Hubby's Dessert: Creme Brulee

AND last but not least.......OUR HONEYMOON CAKE....they boxed this up for us so we could take it back to our room for a midnight snack......

Later that night, we dug into it and weren't that impressed with it..very plain:confused3

After dinner, we roamed around the ship one final time before returning to our room to finish packing. Don’t forget, luggage needs to be outside of your room by 11:00 pm or you’ll have to lug it off the ship yourself!!! One more moment on our verandah, gazing at the water and then it was time for bed.

Once again we woke up early, as our breakfast seating was at 8:00 am sharp! There is no room service breakfast on the final day, you go to breakfast where you ate dinner the night before, and then you leave the ship immediately after breakfast. Breakfast was just OK. It wasn’t bad, but you could tell that it was more of a formality, and the crew was anxious to get it over with, so they could clear the ship. Think about it. You leave the ship around 9:00 which gives them 2.5 hours to clean over 1,000 cabins and all of the public areas before 2,000 new people come onboard, and the cycle starts all over again!!! UGH…

Disembarkation was SO EASY! You walk off the ship, find a porter with a cart who will assist you in finding your luggage, you clear customs (VERY EASY), then the porter walks with you to the parking lot to your car. Piece of Cake!

My Summary and Five Favorite Memories:

All I can say is WOW,WOW, WOW!!! I am IN LOVE with the Disney Cruise Line AND thier private island, CASTAWAY CAY.....just simply paradise. I've been to Disney World many of times and I LOVE the magic that I experience everytime I go back, BUT the Disney Cruise takes it to a whole different level. The service was IMPECCIBLE and I MEAN IMPECCIBLE!! I felt like a princess the whole time!!!! And the beach at Castaway Cay has been one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever been on. We will definitly be taking another cruise on Disney...but next time it will be longer than 4 nights!!! :thumbsup2

1) Seeing the Wonder for the first time took my breathe away!!

2) Being treated like a princess everywhere I went!!

3) The day at Castaway Cay....wow...the water, the sand, the stingray. These are images that will stay in my heart forever!!

4) My first snorkel experience!! WOW!! It was just sooo peaceful looking at all of the sea life in thier habitiat. Just AMAZING!!

5) Celebrating our Honeymoon at Palo's. What a gift it is, to not only be alive eight years after surviving a terrible illness, but spending the time I was given with the love of my life, my husband. AND what a great way to celebrate LIFE and LOVE......on a DISNEY CRUISE!!! :goodvibes

Hubby’s Summary and Five Favorite Memories:

Without a doubt, this was our BEST VACATION ever. The entire cruise was carefree, well organized and so romantic and relaxing. We’ve taken many vacations together, including many “all inclusive” resorts in Cancun, and this cruise was better than all of them. I can’t wait until we can experience it all over again. I love you Sweetie!

1) The excitement we felt when we saw the ship the first time at Port Canaveral

2) The thrill of being on our private verandah as you gazed out at the Ocean

3) Our honeymoon dinner at Palo’s (wonderful, incredible). Sitting across from my wife in her wedding dress made me the proudest man in the world.

4) Castaway Cay. Words can’t describe how beautiful this island paradise is.

5) Snorkeling for the first time and ALMOST parasailing.

Hey! I love your insight and appreciate your kindness on the CB (even if we don't always agree) and your trip looks like it was a blast. Can't wait to hear about the second half. You two are adorable.

PS: Saw your post on another thread and I wish you two all the luck in the world and hopefully good news soon!

Hey T! Great report so far! Great to see you guys back at Disney! Can't wait to hear all about your inaugural visit to your home resort.

Sorry the Boardwalk wasn't all you had hoped. I have never been, but I think I would have the same response to it. Plus, even though I tend to be a night owl, when I do decide to sleep I really like quiet, so I think it would not be the best place for me. I did love Yacht & Beach Club, but I expect the Villas over there are probably a lot harder to get than the Boardwalk.

At least after staying at the Boardwalk, hopefully your arrival at your home resort will be even more exciting. (Obviously it would not have been good if you decided you liked the Boardwalk more!)

I have learned so much about the cruises from reading your report. Like you, I would also be inclined towards more dressy attire at the dinners....too bad not everyone subscribed to this view. Just makes the whole experience a little more special IMO.

Reading each of your summaries of the trip was great....how wonderful to find an entirely different Disney vacation that you each love so much!

Oh, and as for the Tim Horton's reference - I had to laugh! I am from Canada where it is a staple. And I have definitely met Canadians in the Parks after overhearing people wishing for a Tim Horton's as they are drinking that Nestle crap! Obviously I know Tim Horton's has invaded New England and some of the northern border states, including Ohio, but I still think it is funny to now hear Americans pinning for the stuff - LOL! (I guess now I can't always assume someone making a Tim's comment in WDW is always going to be a Cannuck!)

Finally, I keep hearing this reference to "fish extenders", and even after seeing your photo I am at a complete loss. Can you fill me in?

Can't wait for more!!!:goodvibes

Great report and fabulous pictures. Very clear and concise. Love it.

We have been on many cruises but never tried Disney. Usually can't get away fron their parks.:) :) After seeing you report,I am convinced we have to try Disney.
