When using a Suica card, app, or just regular monorail or train ticket, does each person need his/her own card/phone? I live near DC, and when my son and I ride Metro, we share one Metro card, and I pass it back to him after I've swiped myself through. Is that okay to do in Japan?

Thanks :-)

Thank you! Card-sharing is common in the US (at least in DC and New York), but obviously, things aren't the same everywhere.

I also was just watching a YouTube video yesterday that explicitly mentioned this. We have always had separate cards there, but the presenter specifically called this out as a no go. :-)

You need to tap in and tap out since the cost is distance based. I think that's why everyone needs their own card. The systems where you can share a card tends to be per ride based regardless of distance.

If your son is under 12, he can get a child Suica for 50% off.
