Transgendered at Disneyworld

I have recently decided to be myself and be a girl full time. Some people are not very nice and I wonder if I would be safe at Disneyworld. Any comments and advice would be appreciated. Lisa

You'll find all types of people at WDW. Most will pay no attention to you since they are there for the parks. Unfortunately some will notice you. There is a chance that somebody will take exception. In this respect WDW is just like real life.

Grats . I don't mean to be a downer, but going to share a concern. Consider how you are travelling as well. Current TSA procedures are really unpleasant for the transgendered. At the parks and resorts you should be fine. As others said, the guests are the potential problem and frankly you are just one of several thousand people they will see that day. Still, I'd suggest not going alone. A friend is very valuable for the odd jerk who makes a comment.

I can only offer my experience. I got dirty looks from some for nursing my son. He was completely covered w/ a blanket. So, I got to a point where I didn't care & was descrete, but didn't cover his head. It was late May & super hot. Most either didn't notice or were very nice. I found when I stopped worrying about what everyone was thinking & the looks I was getting, I had a much more enjoyable trip.

One of the reasons I love WDW so much is that cast members are so friendly, no matter who you are. If you do encounter a curt CM, don't take it personally b/c that CM is most likely curt to everyone. I have had very few encounters w/ CM's that weren't over the top nice. I wish you a wonderful trip & magical memories.

Lisa you will most definately be "safe" in WDW. They are very concerned w/ their guests safety.

You might get some stares or whispers from guests, but you won't be harassed. If you have any problems at all let a CM know.

Having been brought up very secluded, it has taken me a long time to accept myself and I have been with my partner for 11 years. I still have a few hang-ups that I am trying to overcome, like show affection in public with my DP. It has only been recently that I have been able to have a conversation about my personal life with people. It takes a strong person to hold their head high and be who they are.

Most people there that week will be thinking the same thing you are. I am married and the mother of 2 girls, we are going that week, and i have to tell you, the only person i have ever noticed at disney other that my husband and children was a man cussing his (maybe 10 year old) son, the f word and all, guess it wasnt the happyist (how do you spell that) place on earth for him. I go to disney to enjoy myself and my life, so should you. Maybe you do go for this point of view, but to heck with all else but you and yours. Have fun and enjoy your vacation.

Good for you! Everyone should be able to be themselves all the time. Also, welcome to the DIS. There are immature jerks everywhere, unfortunately, but I think most people at WDW are more interested in their own vacations. Enjoy yourself and don't let other people determine whether you have a good time.

Indeed some people do stare but the best thing to do is ignore them and as Bette Midler said "Be who you were born to be and be it unashamed" =). Those that whisper about it have nothing to do with you, and chances are you'll never see them again.

I'll just add that even if you hear a snicker or rude comment, don't be so sure a CM didn't hear it and defend you. I had that happen when I was door host at Atlantic Dance. Someone who might have been transgendered entered and some teenagers snickered and made rude comments. I probably wasn't very "disney" like, but I let them know that was unacceptable. Remember at WDW, LGBT are everywhere, everyday, watching out for each other

People get dirty looks and sneers for all kinds of things. DH has mild cerebral palsy and needs crutches and calls himself gimpy. He gets all kinds of looks and was beat up as a kid because of who he was. Kids want to know why 5 year old DS's nose is crooked - he has a cleft palete. Just remember that this isn't about you-it's about someone else's need to be superior. Again, congrats and I'm sure you will have a wonderful trip!

Let me add my congratulations to the mix and a "Welcome to the club!"

As to Trouble at WDW, I honestly wouldn't worry about it.

In the end it's all about confidence I think. I'm about a decade post-op and nowadays I honestly don't give a flying fig what other people think of me, and that confidence means that nothing ever gets said. And trust me, most days I don't go out of my way to look ultra feminine. That's another thing I've become comfortable with so don't feel the need to do any more.

I've only ever felt safe and respected at WDW, you'll be fine.

I do agree with others, re: TSA however. I really wouldn't have wanted to go through the current security measures pre-op given they nigh on grope you nowadays.

I'd never usually suggest this as you shouldn't have to dress for others, but if you have to fly, going andro might be a good option.

I am curious as well to the question "How well do you pass"?

I was in the MK in June a few years back, sitting on the curb near guest relations, waiting for the parade to start. In walked 'a very unique looking individual'. Wearing Bright Lime green Hot pants and white high heels and a very tall UP do Hair do. A woman sitting next to me, turned to her husband and said "why anyone would wear high heels to a theme park is beyond me." The husband looked and me and we both smiled.
Remember We are all family. WDW Theme park is a family theme park, Not disco. Lord knows there have been a few occasions that Cast members have had to ask Female gender born guests to consider purchasing a regular T-shirt to cover up their 'fun bags on the verge of being liberated from skimpy bikini tops.'

If your appearance is typical Theme Park Guest, and not "Look at me, I want to be center of attention" or "Vegas Show Girl comes to Disney", then bravo, ..... I mean "Brava"

Hi, Thanks for the comment. All my friends say I am very pretty and would pass very easily but I am 6'1. I have not had any problems in public and most people don't notice me. I always dress nice, not trampy. I have been to Disneyworld many times but never as a girl. I'm hoping for the best. Thanks, Luv Lisa
