Just wondering if all of you frequent flyers can give me some advice on how to travel from each airport to hotels and return to airports. Do you get private transfers or do you grab a taxi. We will have the 4 of us with the two little ones in tow and probably up to 8 bags including carryons? :confused3

Jess this is such a subjective thing. Everyone will likely have a different opinion. On our first trip to the US we had private transfers organised for everywhere because we'd never travelled overseas and we were a bit "scared" about getting ourselves to and from airports.

When you say 8 bags, do you mean 4 suitcases and 4 backpacks? What is the luggage breakdown. If it's 8 suitcases then obviously a normal cab won't work and you would need an SUV or something similar. You can get larger cabs though that seem to hold more.

I like private transfers but if the airport is really close to our hotel then I wouldn't mind catching a cab.

There are other much more experienced people than me to answer this one though.

Majority of the trip we will have 4 large roller suitcases, 3 roller carryons and one hand luggage. The cities we will visit are New Orleans, NYC, Orlando, LA and Hawaii (transfers are already purchased for Hawaii).

we used a variety of transport options in the cities we visited...

in la/disneyland we just used the airport shuttle/disneyland resort express shuttle (operated through grayline).

in nyc we used a cab from airport to hotel, on the way back to the airport, the hotel arranged a livery car service for us (flat rate, same as the cab rate, but much nicer car/more room etc.

in orlando, we used mears shuttle service ($30 round trip pp) both too & from airport, but used a car service (through the hotel) for our trips out to florida mall etc.

in vegas, we just used cabs to/from airport as it was only 5-10 mins from mccarran airport to our hotel...

not sure if any of that helps with your destinations, but we just basically went with what we felt was cheapest/easiest for the destination and our needs. when we used the shuttle service, they had no issues with our luggage, and we had a mountain, as evidenced below:

Wow! I felt bad saying how much luggage we are going to have :rotfl:

Lol we started out with 1carry on plus 1 checked bag each. We ended up with 1carry on plus 2 checked bags each plus our 'personal item' laptop bag/handbag/backpack :sad2:

This time we intend on doing laundry and taking 1carry on and only a half full checked bag..

so proud:thumbsup2

2 of us :we have 4 large suitcases, and 2 carry ons......we just fit in a large cab, at least one bag + carry ons get put in the back seat with me...
we are using magical express this time for WDW,
airport hotel shuttle buses for lax stay,
and a cab for Vegas as we will only have carry on.

Last night we caught 2 taxis for 6 of us from Laguardia to Doubletree times square we had 10 suitcases, 2 carry ons 2 backpacks. It was $35 each taxi.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I think a taxi is out of the question now as we would only fit in a large one which would limit us greatly. I suppose when I book the transfers I will have to mention how much gear we will have. On our way home so from Orlando to La to Hawaii to Aus we are allowed two 23kg checked luggage each......god help us all :rotfl2: That will make 8 checked bags and 4 carry ons!
