Hi there! If I wanted to buy points to transfer, does it matter what the other persons home resort is? Or when their points need to be used by?

I assume you mean to get points from another member for your use. Transferred points retain both the use year and applicable home resort they had before transfer. Thus, as to how they can be used -- at which resort at 11 moths out, and when they expire -- is determined by the transferor's use year and resort. Once transferred, you can bank the points as long as it is done within the banking window of the transferor. but you cannot borrow already transferred points.

You just want to be sure whatever you get can be used for the trip or trips you want them for.

Once you get them, they will work well in bookings online 7 months or less. If trying to use in the home resort period of the points, you will still have to call to use.

Yes I meant from another member. Thank you!

So if they are points that go with my home resort and are in the appropriate time frame do they just transfer over seamlessly or do I still have to call member services?
Also, can you post on these boards “I’m looking for...” or is it just for people renting and transferring that can post?

Sorry for all the questions! I’m very new and trying to figure this all out!

The member that owns the points has to call MS to transfer their points to the recipient. It's not uncommon for the receiving member to join in on that phone call to ensure that the transaction goes correctly. The receiving member could stay on the line afterward to book their reservation.

As far as ISO posts, they're not allowed. But you can check the rent/trade board for posts that include points for transfer.

Most of why I have read here and elsewhere is that nothing is working during a home resort window. My guess is the system was set up that way because they are allowing OTU points to be used online and those are restricted to 7 months
Or less.

So, I’d plan on needing to call. Just to add, transfer points can not be used in trips before any banked or borrowed points sitting in your membership. If they were from a different resort, and using home resort time, MS can.

But any members own points that are restricted will always be uses first.

What is OTU and MS? So, for example, I want to stay in a 2 bedroom villa at Old Key West (my home resort). I don’t have enough points for that so I wanted to purchase points to cover the rest of the points needed. So as long as I’m using up all of my points first then I can use the transfer points? And then can you bank what’s remaining from the purchased points?

OTU is one time use points you can buy from DVC at the 7 month window for $19/ point, up to 24 each UY.

MS is member services, You can get the transfer before you need to book. If they are OKW points, they can be used at OKW, but you may have trouble when booking online at 11 months with your own points. So, you might have to book as many nights as you can, and then call MS to add the rest using those transferred points.

You can use transferred points before any of your own points, unless those points are banked or borrowed...then those have to be put in the reservation first,

For example, say you got 100 OKW points transferred in your account. If you had 50 banked points, those have to be used first...then you can use the transferred points or your own to finish the trio, and bank the rest,

If they are the same home resort, then I’d use those first, after any banked points you have, and then bank your own. If you have no banked points, it won’t be an issue!

OTU = One Time Use (also referred to as OTUPs - One Time Use Points). These are points that can be purchased from DVC (up to 24 points @$19 apiece) at 7 months in order to complete a reservation.

MS = Member Services

Points are taken in the following order:
  1. Points in holding
  2. Banked points
  3. Borrowed points
  4. Transferred points
  5. Annual allotment (current UY) points
So it's not necessary to use all of your points to make a reservation. But you will need to use all holding, banked and borrowed points before transferred points can be applied.
