Transferring points

I've never transferred points (in or out) before. I'm going to need to do so for a Jan. 2017 trip.
A friend has 100 points he's willing to transfer into my account.

He has a Dec. UY and I have a March UY. If we complete the transfer, will those 100 points retain his Dec. UY or will they switch to my March UY?

If they retain the December UY, how would I make a reservation for January (wouldn't those points need to be used by November 30th?).

This is confusing, so I'd appreciate any help from those knowledgeable in transferring points.

Transferred points retain their original use year and home resort status. So they will stay December and not your home resort, but the friend's home resort. 7-11 rules still apply to transferred points for booking.

You would need to bank those Dec points. But they might not let you transfer Dec 2015 into March 2016. They would have to go into your March 2015 UY. Make sure you transfer them before March 2016.

If you think that you are confused, MS also gets confused and often a supervisor needs to get involved to use the transferred points. Plus you won't see the transferred points online.

We transferred once, MS couldn't find where they put the points, we were booking AKV CL which was available. By the time MS found the points and got a supervisor to help, the reservation dates were snatched up by someone else.
