transferring points to sw rapid rewards

My husband has a chase preferred account. If we cancel the card, do the points need to be used in a certain time frame? Can certain rewards like flights or car rentals only be done while the card is still open and active? If so, we would transfer the points to SW but we wouldn't necessarily use then on flights, could we use them on anything in the SW redemption site?

You need to move/use the points before you cancel the card unless your husband has another card that also earns points.

What kind of preferred account? For Ultimate Rewards, your Chase account must remain active for you to be able to use them. For a Chase Southwest Visa, the points go into your Rapid Rewards account at the end of a billing cycle. You can cancel the card at any time but still retain your RR points.
