Transferring Developer Points

Hi I had a question about transferring developer points. A friend of ours purchased a DVC at AKV last summer on a referral from us. They made plans to take their extended family down this spring. They book 2 2bdrm at AKV. As it turns out most their family ended cancelling on them! . They have switch their reservation and done what they can to use their points. They still have 40 developer points left that have to be used by the middle of July.

They called us last night and ask if wanted the left over points ! Free of charge! Now we already have 2 trip scheduled for this summer so we could use the points.

My questions are:

Can our friends simply transfer their points to us? Is there a charge?

Assuming they could transfer the points to us:
If we already a reservation for the BCV July 3rd and 4th. Could we use their developer points instead of the points we are currently using? I understand our points will go into a reservation status.

I'm not sure how developer points work, since we never got them. Has anyone ever done this? Does any of this make sense?

I don't know for sure if developer points can be transferred or not. Maybe someone else will know for sure.

If they can, then there would be no charges.

If you made your current BCV reservation at 7-months or less, then you would be able to swap the developer points for your current points. If you made the reservation using "home resort booking window", then you could not directly swap since developer points cannot be used to book a reservation more than 7-months ahead, and allowing a swap would effectively be defeating the home resort priority restrictions. However, if this were the case, if their was availability, you could cancel the current reservation and make a new reservation using the developer points. Again, based strictly on availability.

Also, developer points had a start date when they could be used. This depended on when the person purchased. If their points cannot be used before July 4th, then you could not swap them.

If you are able to swap, then your points would be returned back to you as regular points. They would not be reservation points. Reservation points are when you make a reservation at a non-DVC resort such as the Poly, PO, etc.

but could Developer Points be "rented" by the OP? Or can they only be used by the person originally granted them?

I am sure you can rent them if you have smeone patient enough to wait on everything.Because DP have to be manually put in for reservations it could be about 4 weeks before you get a confirmation from what I have been told.

Ask your friend to try to use the developer points to make a reservation at the BCV for July 3 & 4 for the same type of unit that you already have reserved. If successful, you can cancel the corresponding days of your reservation and then get the reservation made by your friend linked to your reservation.

For the above to work, July 3 & 4 should either be the beginning of your existing reservation or the end of your reservation. If it is in the middle, you may run into trouble canceling without losing the rest of the reservation.

This strategy (friend makes reservation for something you already have) would work for any dates that you already have a reservation for (as long as the reservation is before the developer points expire). But again, the days that will be replaced by the developer reservation should be at the beginning or end of your trip so that you can easily cancel if your friend finds availability.

Thank you everyone for the advice.

I think some the problem is the time of year we are looking to use the points. As well as July 3rd and 4th are Thursday and Friday night, which means it will cost more than 40 points for that reservation! Anyway I appreciate the support.
