Transferred Points question**this will make you think

I'm getting transferred points from someone who has a different UY than me.
One of my UYs is Sept. If they transfer their Apr 06 UY points to me, would I be able to use them for vacations this June-July? I'm assuming that I would be able to use them since the UY stays with the points transferred in. --or will they have to bank them into my Sept '06 UY? I've already asked MS about this (fuzzy what they told me), and I'm calling them about this on Tuesday, but I just want to know if any DVC expert on this site knows the answer.

I also have a Mar UY account, but it's at a different DVC.

PM or post on this thread.

I'm dying to know!

From the "official" DVC definition regarding transferring points, the points are supposed to retain their original Use Year and Home Resort status.

In reality, MS either is incapable of or lacks the desire to track the points as defined and allows them to assume the Use Year and Home Resort of the account into which they were transferred.

If you receive a transfer specifically for the purpose of having the 11 month reservation priority at a resort other than your own, you can have MS manually track the points to allow their use in that fashion. The computer software currently used apparently does not have the ability to track transferred points automatically.

Enjoy!

I knew someone would know! Thanks***so does that mean that I would be able to use them as April UY '06 points for vacations this June-July, or will they be banked into my Sept '06 UY account? Duh!! I'm a little slow...

I have a feeling you're more on top of this than most CMs. I'm very appreciative of all that they do know, and keep track of, but it's been a little inconsistent with the information about transferring. I'm really trying hard to keep my transactions as simple as possible.

You will likely find that the points assume your home resort and use year and you will not be able to easily use them for the original home resort or use year. As Doc says they can track them manually but this is a hassle and means you will not be able to do so easily or make day by day reservations at the 11 month window.

I was told that too by MS. It is a hassle to track them manually, it will take them 4 days to do it. So, I wouldn't be able to book anything until then.

We have the same resort, but different UYs. So, my question for MS on Tuesday will be: what do I need to do so that I can use some points for June-July vacations. I'm hoping that whatever points I don't use for June-July bookings**(availability will be an issue), I'll be able to use with my Sept UY and not have them tracked manually.

Thanks!

And the points you transfer into your account will have the same use year, so 2006 pts will be put into your 2006 use year. As noted in the posts above, the only way that you can keep the original use month is to have MS track it manually.

I recently transferred points to someone who had a different use year than I do. I was able to specify to Member Services whether these points were to go into the member's 2005 or 2006 use year. This was a very important distinction, as if they had gone into the member's 2006 use year, the member would have only had a two-month window (between when the points became and available and when the points expired) to use them, which would not have been good.

Why not have the member make the reservation in your name for June/July? If not that and they assume the Sept 2006 UY you should be able to borrow points from your own Sept 2006 UY allotment to use this June/July and then use the transferred points for the next trip. Can't remember if you can borrow transferred points but if so you should have no problem using any of the points for a trip this June/July if you can get a reservation this close to a trip date. I think you have several options here and it should work out for you. Good luck and have a great trip.

Good point. I have too many dates to look up. It would be a nightmare for someone to do it. I just want to be able to talk to member services and decide on the options etc...I don't know if I would be able to borrow transferred points. I know that they can be banked. I'll find out tomorrow and post back for those that are interested. I already have CRO room reservations for the dates that I need and some DVC rooms booked too. I just could do a little better with points. I'm also spoiled by the DVC accomodations. I admit it! It's not just my son and husband!! There are some rooms available scattered though. So, I'll try my luck. Rather my daughter's. She's very blessed! Of course, she's looking forward to staying at POP Century for days! I tried to book rooms at the Nickelodean...too pricey!! I don't think that we're ever going to stay there!

Cinderpals,
Why don't you transfer the points into your Mar UY? If your reservation is for Jun-Jul 2006, you are within the 7month booking period even if it is a different DVC....

I just did the same thing (I think). I had points tranferred from a Dis'er with a different use year than mine. I asked Member services how this would work specifically in order to make sure I could use the points. They told me that the points retain the use year from the donor. When I went to book my room for next April/May this week, she told me I could not use the points as is, they would have to be banked(which I had been told previously by Member services could not be done). All worked out fine but as you can see, nothing is really written in stone and until it was done I was quite nervous about it.

If transferred points take on the transferee's characteristics, what happens when the transferee has 2 different contracts? If I own at OKW and SS, and have points transferred to me can I specify which contact I would like them to be attached to?

If you don't have the same home resort or use year, you can specify which contract and also in many cases, which use year they go to.

Admittedly I don't know a lot of the intricacies being discussed, but as I understand it now, it seems like sort of a loop hole in the system. That is, if someone only has only 100 BCV points with a Dec. UY at the 11 month bookiing window, but needs 256 BCV points, they can get a transfer from an SSR owner and those SSR points, for all intents and purposes become BCV points and are able to be used like and in conjunction with the original 100 BCV points? Do I have this right?

If so, doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose of having only so many points available for certain resorts for certain time periods to control inventory and occupancy?

Thanks for the help. I never did anything "fancy" with my points, so I'm a little ignorant on the topic.

Sorry this is a late reply, but ChickieToo, I think you are exactly correct. I'll be needing to rent points for a 2007/2008 Christmas/New Years trip. I'll have OKW points to use, but want to stay at BCV or BWVs. So, I'll probably rent out my OKW points & rent BWV or BCV points so that I can have the 11 month booking window at those resorts (or I'll just rent out my points to pay for someone else to make the ressie for me).

This seems like a big hassle. Maybe we should consider a small add-on at BWV or BCV and then have our OKW points transferred to that contract everytime we want a stay at the smaller resorts during a peak period. Now, I'm not suggesting this in reality, but this does seem like a loophole that should be closed.

After living, breathing this transfer of points issue, I could of had the points transferred to my Mar UY 06 which happens to be a BCV. The points either would have been manually tracked to keep them BWV which I didn't need to have. They were transferred to my BWV contract '05 SeptUY so that I could use them for June/July '06 dates. If I can't use all of the points, they will be
banked to the '06 UY. If all of my waitlisted dates come through, I will be using up all buy 1 point! Gotta go, will post the rest when I get back....need to drop my son off.
