How difficult is it to find someone who is willing to transfer points into my account? I am considering purchasing VGF and don't always want a studio, but want to go each year. Thank You

Donna

It's against DVC rules for you to get paid for a transfer so finding someone who wants to give you free points will be a challenge.

Seems like you need to buy extra points and bank when you want a larger room.

People pay for transfers all the time. Disney won't help you if your deal goes bad. Here on the DIS, you are not allowed to request a transfer, so you have to find someone offering. Take a look in the Rent/Trade board and see how many times you can find in the past couple years.

People do a lot of things, it's still against the rules.

Learning all the time, did not know this was not allowed. I read that that one transfer was allowed each year. I was not looking for free points, just the ability to get additional points if the need arose. I am inexperienced in owning DVC and learning the ropes.

Understood, just wanted readers to know the official rules, also transferred points may not show up in your account and you will have to have MS book the reservation for you. While DVC allows transfers, IMO it's clear that they don't want you doing them, my guess is that they would rather have you buy additional points.

If you only need a few points (Max 25 I think) there is also the option of one time use points from Disney. I have used that before. I have also had "rented" points transferred in. I didn't know it was against the rules at the time.

And remember that transferred points will be seen in your account and bookable online ONLY IF they match your home resort and use year. Otherwise, you will have to call member services to use them.

It is technically against the rules though it's done routinely. You would not have known had Bill not mentioned it. DVC could start enforcing this at any time or they could change the transfer rules negative to your situation, they have several times over the years. IMO anyone looking at a studio routinely needs a cushion of at least 10-20% unless they are figuring on Premier points costs anyway. In your situation you might just go a little beyond this enough to allow a 1 BR every 3 years or so. That assumes you want VGF for most all trips. If you're planning any real usage non VGF you should seriously look at the costs because ever time you use points elsewhere you're losing value. What's best would depend on specifics and personal choices. I also tend to favor avoiding any smaller contract that is more per point than a full sized contract thus I normally wouldn't go under 150 points or so. I'd also plan on Lake View not standard though this could reduce the extra you need if your preference is standard. A week a year in a studio looks something like 200 points, doing a 1 BR part of the time likely more in the low to mid 300's to get one every 3 years. One might consider doing the VGF 150-200 then something else in the same size range, maybe SSR or AKV or BLT.

You can purchase one time use points, but they are applicable only for reservations at 7 month window.

Yep. Just found out..only 7 months out. I booked two extra nights at the last minute for out September vacation. Wouldn't have done it, if I realized one time points can't be obtained at 11 months. I'm sick...17 points short for a very hard to get ressie. :(
