I am fairly new to being a DVC member ....

I am thinking of getting a transfer from another member. We borrowed points for our last year trip. What is the difference between transferring and renting points? I noticed some ads say no transfers? Thanks so much!

You are only allowed 1 transfer (in *or* out, not both) per use year per contract. With renting, someone else controls the points, reservation, dining plan, and DME. When you have points transferred in, you control them. So, you can bank them (if eligible), change your reservation, decide on a dining plan at the last minute, set your own DME. Basically, you don't have to stress that someone else controls your vacation. Use year can get a bit tricky, though.

Basically UY is your new calendar. The start of your new calendar is the month of your UY. Everything regarding your DVC points falls in that year. If you plan a trip towards the beginning of your UY and you need to cancel, you probably still have time to bank those points or reschedule during the same UY. If you plan a trip towards the end of your UY and you need to cancel, you probably are past the point where you can bank the points and will lose them if you don't use them before the end of your UY.

If you have multiple contracts with the same owner and same UY, then you probably have one master contract with add-ons (12345.001, 12345.002, 12345.003, etc). If the contracts have different owners listed on the deed or are a different UY, they have different master contracts (12345.001, 23456.001, 34567.001, etc). You can only transfer in or out once per master contract per UY. That's why it is hard to get a small transfer of points. People who want to transfer want to transfer all the points they aren't going to use.

Thanks for the explaining UY to me . So if I am understanding transfers correctly. The DVC member will transfer the points into my account and I can use the transferred points at a later date? I am not ready to make a reservation as I am not sure how many family members are travelling with us this year

Basically, yes. But the transferred points retain their UY and resort and are subject to the same rules as yours. They expire if not banked. Transferred points can be banked, but they cannot be borrowed. Banked or borrowed points cannot be transferred. You need to transfer in points of the same year as yours. So if you are in your 2016 UY, you cannot transfer in 2015 points.
