Transfer Points and Use Year

Hi everyone! I have a newbie question. If I was going to buy transfer points from another member does it have to be for the same use year as my existing contract?

No. You just need to make sure they are good for the trip you want to use them because they retain their regular UY and home resort,

Transferred points can not be borrowed to book a trip, but they can be banked forward once you get them.

Also transferred points do not appear in your DVC Vacation Points Overview screen. You'll need to remember that you have them and call member services when you want to book using them. I've read too many stories about people forgetting they had transferred points.

So even though they have 2 different use years, you are able to use them to book a stay as if they are one? Minus the expiration part…I get that.

Yes,, they show up as a temporary contract so as long as the trip works for both UYs of the points, all is good.

For example, I could use both Sept and transferred Dec UY 2022 points to book a Feb 2023 trip as that trip falls in the 2022 UY of each of those.

However, you can not book a Nov 2022 UY trip with transferred Dec 2022 UY points because it would require borrowing and you can borrow transferred points, even though it works for the Sept 2022 UY points.

Currently in ROFR with a VGF contract with 91 points expiring 5/31/22 - thinking after closing, they may be in my account mid May but I already have a trip planned for end of May. Is there a way of transferring them into my current reservation?

The problem is that you would be modifying your current trip less than 31 days out which means any points you replace will be put into to holding.

So, you’d have to ask MS to give you an exception to the holding rule. It is certainly worth a try…

What if you have transfer points from a different resort than your home resort and you make a reservation further than 7 months out using your own booked and banked points, can you still “pay” for it with the transfer points when you stay there?

No, sorry. I've assumed the transferred points are not originally from your home resort.

If it were allowed, it would bypass the home resort prior period.

To be sure we are talking about the same thing, your assumption is correct on the transferred points (they are not from my home resort), however, I do have enough points (home resort points) to book the reservation I want. The issue is I still have transfer points to use. Just seemed like an area that would potentially be gray as you still need full points to utilize the 11 month window, but could decide on what points were actually used when the actual vacation happened. thanks for the help. I thought I had done my research and knew alot and then I actually bought in and that is when my real questions began!!

No matter what status the points are in, you can not replace home resort points that were used during the home resort period with non home resort points.

Its based on when you book, not when the trip is happening. So, since The transferred points are not the same resort, you can’t swap.

The only exception is if, 7 months or less from the trip, there are still nights at the beginning or the end of your trip that you can now book with the transferred points, and then free up nights you booked during home resort period.

And, just to be clear, if the transferred points are in a different membership than the trip, and are already banked, you could not transfer them even if they were the same resort.
