Transfer photos from computer TO memory card

I'm sorry if this has already been asked and answered but the search function was no help.

My brother is stationed in Iraq and we are trying to put together a digital picture frame for him for Christmas. I waited until the last minute and now I'm having problems.

With my old camera I could copy pictures from my computer to the memory card in my camera by hooking my camera up to the coputer and just copy and pasting. Two new cameras and neither one will allow any thing to be uploaded to the camera and it doesn't even show the memory card. i tried another (better) camera here at work with the same results.

I did an internet search and found that a memory card reader may solve my problem. My question is this: does it have to be a memory card reader/writer to do this or will just a memory card reader work?

Hmmm, maybe some links? I've only ever bought a 'reader' but I've been able to use them both ways.

a card reader will work fine, when connected to your pc it will show as an external drive, then you can just copy your pics over to it

I just bought a pair of these memory card readers - $5 with free shipping, and they work with SDHC cards (as well as regular SD cards, of course.) Hard to beat that price.

I don't know how long they'll be on sale. I bought them shortly after Thanksgiving, they came soon afterwards and work fine. You can also get them clear or brown (I linked to the blue one.)

Sometimes the camera is designed to not allow you to write from the computer connection. It allows you to copy the other way. My printer is the same way - it's got a card reader in it. I can read the photos off, but I can't write back to the card normally.

There is a setting normally that changes that, but I'd recommend getting a cheap card reader like groucho mentioned. You can get cheap ones at places like Walmart, kmart, etc. if you can't wait for an online order to get to you.
