Just got a prescription for Transderm Scop. Has anyone used this product? What did you think of it? It's our first cruise so I don't even know if I'll need it or not but thought I should prepare just in case. I told my doctor I wanted something that would not make me sleepy and this is what she recommended. I noticed that product info says not to drink alcohol with this, don't drink much but was planning on enjoying some of those wonderful tropical drinks.
Also has anyone been told they need any vaccines for the cruise? My doctor didn't think I needed any but she is checking and will call me.
Thanks!

No vaccines needed, so you are set there.

Try the patch out before you go, some say the side effects are worse than feeling motion sickness. You may be fine with Bonine and some Sea-Bands. Bonine won't make you sleepy. If you use the patch, make sure you get enough for the whole trip and start early as that needs to get in your system. Good luck.

Have a great time on your first cruise, you will be hooked!

We did update our adult vaccines before cruising the first time..

hepatitis and tetnus..just to be on the safe side..never hurts to be prepared.

As far as the patch...I got the prescription before I left also..after reading the side effects, I said no way. Took it with just in case. Now, keep in mind..I have terrible motion sickness and didn't know what to expect on the ship. I also had dramamine and sea bands. I took a dramamine before we checked in at the port that morning..put my sea bands on before we headed to the sail away party and I was good to go. On our second cruise..didn't even need the seabands and only took dramamine the morning we left..just as a precautionary measure.

They only recommend vacinations if you're travelling to some of the more underdeveloped islands. St. John, St. Thomas and St. Maarten don't fall into that category. One of the books I picked up covered that for travel.

Tetanus is always good to have though..just incase you cut your foot on gosh knows what walking barefoot on the beach.

I would be VERY careful with the patch (or any medication) due to it's numerous side effects! There are people who do very well with the patch but then there are many others who do not do well with the patch. I happen to be in the later category and it was NOT worth it to me! I had NO idea I was allergic to the patch UNTIL I put it on and it started making me very ill. My pupils dilated to almost my whole entire eye being black, dizzy, nausea, vomiting, severe headache and it took me 3 days of my cruise to get back on my feet. I spent about 5 hours in the infirmary on the ship trying to figure out what was the matter with me and then getting me hydrated and on something to take away the side effects of the patch and then keep me from getting sea sick! It took 3 days off of my trip and I felt like crap. If you didnt' get a pamphlet with your prescription or your doctor didn't give you anything about it I suggest you go here

and read up. Also remember that it is like a little bandaid behind your ear and it can make your skin itchy around it. If you touch anywhere near the patch and then don't wash your hands immediately and touch the area around your eyes your pupils will probably dilate and it may give you a slight headache! If you want to use it I'd suggest to take a bandaid to put over it just so if you touch it the bandaid will contain the medicine a little more.

If you do decide you want to try it..PLEASE (and I can't stress this enough for ANY MEDICATION) to try it out before you leave! There is nothing worse than sitting in your cabin sick as a dog knowing how much money you spent and not able to do a darn thing about it.

i have used it for years and it works great, usually the first problem you might see is blurred vision, only when reading,it happened to me once and i took the patch off and i was fine, able to read in a few hours i have never gotten sea sick when using the patch and you can eat what you want and the smell wont make you sick hope this helps and make sure you read the inset that is enclosed befor you use it

I've used the patch on all 4 of our Disney cruises as well as every time we fly and travel. The only side effect that I have is a slightly dry mouth, usually worst on the first day or two. Other than that, I'm fine with it. I don't have blurred vision, itchy skin, or anything else. I also drink alcohol with it.
Bonine may be less drowsy, but that also have a different effect on different people. My daughter hated the way that she felt on it and prefers dramamine 2. My son felt the same way.

I would try the patch out at home prior to your cruise just to make sure you feel okay on it. If you do, then go ahead and use it. I would never travel without it!

...

Bonine and Dramamine II are "name brands" of exactly the same generic drug - Meclizine.

I never used the patch buy every single person that I spoke with on our cruises who was using the patch (easy to spot them behind people's ear) had problems with them. I had zero side effects with Meclizine, and was thrilled since I have always had problems with motion sickness but not at all queasy on our cruises.

Here's a link to a prior thread regarding motion sickness. Find Hydster's (Heidi) post there. It's a more comprehensive rundown on the motion sickness meds and their side effects than she posted here. Motion Sickness/ Seasickness

Most important - try out any new meds BEFORE you leave so you and your doctor can make any adjustments before you leave.
